8″ Tapestry Coffee-O-Lantern Afghan Square a free crochet pattern by DivineDebris.com

Wow, can you believe this is square 10?! That the 8″ Coffee-O-Lantern Afghan Square is the 10th in this year’s square CAL. 10 out of 12 squares! WOW. I… probably need to take a minute and work on the borders and some filler squares. What about you?

For this project I didn’t have a “whatevs” kind of attitude like I did with last year’s CAL. This year I wanted a very clear theme, coffee. I wanted to make all the squares in this very small box but I also still want a huge and exciting blanket at the end of it all. I’m still debating about using the coffee squares from last year (the Coffee Mug Square can be found here and the and the Cup of Cocoa Square can be found here) in this year’s blanket but I think I’m going to make a checkerboard looking design with the cream squares. Or maybe I’ll go get some taupe and make a cream to brown fade across… I haven’t quite figured out what I want to do. But I am wildly excited that I’ve made it through 10 and only have 2 more ideas to go.

Now, the question becomes, what will next year’s theme be? What should I make?

Materials

US H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
Aran/ medium/ size #4 weight yarn
- 1.2 oz. / 60 yards
- At least 5 colors
- I used Caron One Pound
Yarn needle

Gauge

16 rows x 15 scs = 4”

Terms/ Stitches used

RS: right side
Ch: chain
St: stitch
Slip st: slip stitch
Sc: single crochet

Notes

This pattern is worked flat from the bottom up, back and forth in rows, with a turn at the beginning/end of the row.
This square measures about 7.5″ unblocked and will come out with 8″ with a sc border (explained below). The photos do not feature a border.
The ch 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.
Every stitch in this pattern is a single crochet. The directions will only tell you what color (ie: Color A, Color B, etc…) and the number in the parentheses tells you how many scs to make.
Your square may need some light blocking.
You will need to know how to create a slipknot on your hook for this pattern.
In the example, the inactive yarn is carried behind the active. If this is confusing, you might want to check out the helpful Moogly video on tapestry.
Color A is off-white (Caron One Pound in Off-White), color B is orange (stash color), and color C is black (Caron One Pound in Black).
