Happy new square day everyone!
Are you like me, do you look forward to the coffee square day? I do.
I really, genuinely, like these squares because they give me this weird grounding feeling every month – they’re something I’ve been making for a while now (almost 2 years if you count last year’s) and it feels comfortable when the post comes around. And I was posting them last year when I was on the road for a couple months and moving, do not recommend having to live out of hotels to anyone, and it kept me feeling like I was normal even if my life felt out of control. I think my warm and fuzzy feelings towards this project is the reason this year’s was coffee themed – I love a good cup of coffee, it also feels me with warm fuzzy feelings (quite literally with the warm at least).
This month I wanted to get back to “simple” and “basic” but not in the way basic is supposed to be a negative. Coffee beans! Coffee beans is where this whole thing starts – we have our coffee but it only comes from the beans (and all the people who work hard to grow, harvest, roast, and ship the beans, shout out to them!). And like all the people who like to drink coffee and make my squares (I imagine there’s an overlap of those groups), we’re all different. It was important to me to make sure these squares were different and in that same way, I wanted to make sure these beans were different. It’s that tiny detail that makes me proud – we’re all different beans and that’s great, ya know? Separate we might be ok but together we make something awesome (like coffee!)

Wow, what a tangent! I, yeah, I hope you like this months square. <3 <3

Gauge

  • 16 rows x 15 scs = 4”
    Ravelry link

Terms/ Stitches used

  • RS: right side
  • Ch: chain
  • St: stitch
  • Slip st: slip stitch
  • Sc: single crochet

Notes

  • This pattern is worked flat back and forth in rows, with a turn at the beginning/end of the row, from the bottom up.
  • This square measures about 7.5″ unblocked and will come out with 8″ with a sc border (explained below). The photos do not feature a border.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.
  • Every stitch in this pattern is a single crochet. The directions will only tell you what color (ie: Color A, Color B, etc…) and the number in the parentheses tells you how many scs to make.
  • The even rows are the right side.
  • Your square may need some light blocking.
  • You will need to know how to create a slipknot on your hook for this pattern.
  • In the example, the inactive yarn is carried behind the active. If this is confusing, you might want to check out the helpful Moogly video on tapestry.
  • Color A is off-white (Caron One Pound in Off-White) and color B is brown (Caron One Pound in Espresso).

Really, really thanks for this pattern. I´m going to make 3 coffee beans squares like cup coasters for my friends birthdays. I very like this pattern.
