Wake the Dead Scarf Crochet Pattern – For Scary Fun

Learn to make the Wake the Dead Scarf - a fun coffee cup and skull design in this square based pattern from a free graph by Divine Debris.

Well… I finally released a fun skull scarf pattern too bad it’s in December (and not September). But better late than never huh? Well I hope that’s the case and that you love this week’s new Wake the Dead Scarf crochet pattern.

So some time in November, not long after Calliope Coffee Bag came out I believe, I got the idea for another coffee cup design… but my brain was still in Halloween mode so I wanted it to include a cute little skull on it. For fun of course (skulls are fun, right?). Unfortunately I had about a billion other wips to work on so it got put onto the back burner as I got through my stack of projects. But I couldn’t get the idea for this pattern out of my head and I had to make it and that’s how December got a new a fun skull coffee cup design. It works, I think (I hope).

Luckily this pattern is pretty easy. I decided I wanted 2 different graphs for more of a “pop” to the design and so the cups looked like they were dancing back and forth in the scarf (at least they do to me). But feel free to make all 8 squares from one or the other design. And unlike many of my other color work patterns, this one is made in half double crochet stitches. It’s one of my favorite stitches and I always feel like I can make patterns with it faster than any other stitch and I wanted to make this pattern fast so I could wear it. In fact, I got a compliment on it on Tuesday, it was pretty neat 😀

Now if this pattern is too Halloween for you, feel free to dress up the skulls with the Santa Hat Applique like I did. I love how the hats dress up the skulls. It’s silly and fun, just like me.

Anyway, while I know this pattern isn’t for everyone, I hope some people like it. If you’ve got Halloween loving friends (especially if they love coffee) I think they’ll get a kick of this pattern. And from a spooky fan to everyone else, if you give this scarf to someone they won’t care it’s January, they’ll love it.

Please note: I was provided the Basic Stitch yarn by Lion Brand Yarn for the purposes of designing other patterns, with compensation. I had this yarn left over so I decided to make this pattern with the yarn. This post features affiliate links, if you click on any of the links and purchase I may make money from that.

  • This pattern is worked in 8 squares (2 different designs). Once your squares are completed, you will seam them into one long scarf.
  • For the squares: begin with ch 28 in color A, turn, and start in the 3rd ch from the hook (skipped sts count as a hdc). Each row begins with a “ch 1, turn”. All st counts are 27 hdc.
  • Each square has a Border, which you add once the square is done, and you use the Border to seam.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the rows does not count as a stitch.
  • The bobbin/ intarisa method is suggested for this pattern, for clarity of design.
  • Blocking is suggested for this pattern.
  • In the photos: color A is tweed, color B is black or purple, color C is white, and color D is brown. Basic Stitch by Lion Brand Yarn was used for all colors.

Wake the Dead Scarf Assembly

So that all the squares face the same direction, you need to assemble the scarf in 2 halves and then sew those halves together.

Once you have all 8 squares (including the borders and blocking complete), arrange them into 2 groups of 4 squares (2 squares each design). Make sure all your squares are facing the same way (RS facing up). For half 1: sew them together, in your preferred method of seaming, in the following order: Square 1, Square 2, Square 1, Square 2. For half 2, sew the next group of 4 squares in the following order: Square 2, Square 1, Square 2, Square 1.

Once your 2 groups are seamed together to create the 2 halves of the scarf, seam together the top 2 squares. Optionally, you can add fringe to your scarf for more personality.
