Skull and Ghost Halloween Squares Free Crochet Patterns

Learn to make the Skull and Ghost Halloween Squares from a free set of crochet graphs by Divine Debris. Perfect for blankets, knitting, cross stitch, coasters, or even a whole sweater.

With Halloween season going strong, I decided to release a new trick-or-treating bag and separately the squares (hopefully so it’s easier to look at the patterns). This post is for the Skull and Ghost Halloween Squares and I hope you like them.

These squares are probably the most classic Halloween design I could think of. And as someone born in the 80’s I love a cute and pixelated designs. It reminds me of happy days, ya know? So this design combo is perfect for a classic pixelated Halloween fun and that recognizable ghost look. If you know me, you know I have both skull and ghost tattoos on my arm… I just love them.

Using Stitch Fiddle I designed these squares from the bottom up. I wanted these designs to be easy 2 color patterns, quick enough to make a few in one afternoon. They’re fantastic for the Patchwork Halloween Bag or you could use them as coasters, a scarf, or anything you can think of for Halloween fun.

Below you’re going to find some photos of the Ghost Halloween Squares and I included them so you can get a bit more insight into how I like to work my squares. The techniques I most often use to keep the square’s RS clean and readable are the same in all my coaster patterns – I always use a combination of tapestry and intarsia when I’m working color work (any color work tbh) because it makes the design better. I will carry yarn on a project, especially if you can hide the carried yarn. It often depends on whats colors I’m using (especially with white, which can be a pain to hide the carried yarn).

I do hope you like this week’s release and how I broke it up. You can still get all the squares in the pdf or blog post for the Patchwork Halloween Bag but hopefully this will be easier for people who just want Halloween designs.

Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by Lion Brand Yarn for the purposes of designing the Patchwork Halloween Bag and the Skull and Ghost Halloween Squares crochet patterns, with compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but this was the first time I tried DIYarn and I really enjoyed it, it’s a great worsted weight yarn and feels very durable. Notes on carrying yarn on the Skull and Ghost Halloween Squares crochet pattern

For yarn conservation and clarity purposes, all colors other than the primary color are not carried throughout the squares. Instead I used “bobbins” or individual stands of color for the other color or colors for all the squares.

Below are 2 close up photos of the Ghost Square showing the 2 colors of the square being used at the same time. Purple is the primary color and used throughout the square and white is the secondary color and is only used where it’s needed. Throughout the square the primary color is crocheted over when the secondary color is called for. When the secondary color is not in use (regardless of which side is facing) it’s dropped down the WS.

When carrying the inactive yarn with the RS facing, make sure it’s behind the previous row’s stitches. And when carrying the inactive yarn with the WS facing, make sure it’s in front of the previous row’s stitches.
Don’t pull the carried yarn too tight or let it hang loose (try to keep it even with the stitches), as it can distort your square’s final look. Blocking may help even out some distortion or bulkiness of the center that may occur.

Remember: Your squares may not be perfectly square when you’re done, but the border and blocking (which is highly suggested) can help this. The seaming can also even out some size inconsistency.
