Free Cute Lemon Squares Crochet Pattern – A Tart Treat

Learn to make the Cute Lemon Squares from a free set of crochet graphs by Divine Debris. Perfect for blankets, knitting, cross stitch, coasters, or even a whole sweater.

Like I said in the Cute Lime Square post, I decided to break up the graphs I used in the Citrus Crush Bag for those who only want a specific square. On this post you’re going to find the Cute Lemon Squares crochet graphs and I hope you like them.

Fun fact about these squares – the lemon was my first square idea I had when making the Citrus Crush Bag. I wanted to make something that felt super Summer and my brain immediately went to a nice bright lemon. But then, as I often do, I couldn’t stop there. I wanted to make the bag more dynamic that just a lemon and I designed the slice, then the lime slice (making sure they’re similar but not the same), and thought to myself “oh, why not go for all 4 and make a lime?” And boom, the Citrus Crush Bag was born.

Using Stitch Fiddle I designed these squares from the bottom up. I wanted to make the lemon dynamic by making it on an angle. And I added the little green stem because I thought the lemon by itself looked a little bare. And if you don’t like the stem on the bottom, you can definitely flip the whole square around and have it facing the top and boom, a whole new look. And the slice of lemon, focused on making the design looked bright but not too busy.

Below you’re going to find some photos of the Cute Lemon and Lime Slice squares and I included them so you can get a bit more insight into how I like to work my squares. The techniques I most often use to keep the square’s RS clean and readable are the same in all my coaster patterns – I always use a combination of tapestry and intarsia when I’m working color work (any color work tbh) because it makes the design better.

I will carry yarn on a project but something like this it’s better not to, too many colors can peek through that off white. And for this design I used 2 separate pieces of color A and dropped them as I got to colors B – D. As I’ve said many times in the past, I go with my gut on when to carry yarn and when to drop it down the RS and that’s just something that comes with practice (for me at least). And hopefully this design willy give you and opportunity to practice and get yourself a “gut feeling.”

In this post there are 2 separate graphs for the Cute Lemon Squares – one for each lime design you see in the photos. If you’d like written/ color coded instructions you can pick them up in my Ravelry shop (I’m working on other places to post them). I do this because it is still a lot of work to make these pattern and buying the pdf helps me to afford yarn, web hosting, time making, and all the other expenses that come with this blog and I do hope you understand.

I do hope you like this week’s release and how I broke it up. You can still get all the squares in the pdf or blog post for the Citrus Crush Bag but hopefully this will be easier for people who just want limes or lemons.

Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by Lion Brand Yarn for the purposes of designing the Citrus Crush Bag and Cute Lemon Squares crochet pattern, with compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but I’ve used Basic Stitch since it was introduced for home decor, garments, and whatnot and it’s one of my favorite worsted yarns to use. Notes on carrying yarn on the Cute Lemon Squares crochet pattern

For yarn conservation and clarity purposes, most of the colors are not carried throughout the
pattern. Instead I used “bobbins” or individual stands of color for the pattern. This method is
called intarsia if you’d like to look it up for further assistance.

Below are 2 close up photos of the Lemon Square showing all the colors being used separately
(this also applies to the Lime Square). If you’d like to carry the yarn, I do suggest that while
carrying the inactive yarn with the RS facing, make sure it’s behind the previous row’s stitches.
And when carrying the inactive yarn with the WS facing, make sure it’s in front of the previous
row’s stitches. Separate strands of color A are used and 1 strand of B is used, B is not taken to
the edges and A is not carried through the center.

Below are photos of the Slice of Lime Square (also applies to the Slice of Lemon Square). Like
the Lemon and Lime Squares, color A is not carried through the square and 2 separate strands
are used on the edges. Color B/D or C/D are carried and alternated through the center of the
square however. Blocking (especially steam blocking) should help any bulkiness in this section.
Refer to the note on the previous page about carrying yarn.
