Free Cute Paw Square Crochet Pattern – Puppy Love!

Learn to make the Cute Paw Print Square, a great tribute to a furry friend, from a free crochet graph by Divine Debris.

First pattern of 2024! Woohoo!
How exciting is it to start a new year of designs, looking at all your yarn and just considering all the possibilities. Or is it just me? Because i’m hopeful and excited about a new year of fun and art. And to kick off 2024 I decided to release a fun little pattern that’s great as a coaster or as a square in a larger project – the Cute Paw Print Square.

Did you know that for the first time since I was a kid, I am living with a dog? My mom has a tiny little pup and he runs this house. And since I’ve been here my mom has been asking for some designs for him. Alas, I just don’t know where to start, even if he’s already laid claim to all he blankets I’ve made or pulled out since I got here. So, I thought I’d ease in with a cute little square that would be a great coaster for their table or sewn together in a scarf or a blanket. I think this is a great little ode to the little dude.

Like most of my coasters, this pattern is worked from the bottom up in rows of single crochet stitches. I like to work designs like this back and forth, using the main color in the whole way through and only using the secondary color when necessary. I don’t like to take the secondary color (the cream in this pattern) to the edges because I think it bulks up the pattern and makes it stiff. Sure I’ll carry the yarn through the center (color A behind color B) but with some blocking it isn’t even noticeable. But that’s just me, you can do whatever you’d like for this pattern.

Anyway, I do hope you like this new pattern. It’s a lot of fun, IMO, and it works up as fast you can crochet. I made all 6 of these colors (I thought a rainbow would be cute) in just 2 – 3 days of work, only a few hours of work tbh. As always, don’t forget to steam block your mug rug, it helps to soften the whole design, which could be on the thicker side when you’re carrying yarn like this. This is the steamer I use.

Please note: I was not provided the yarn for this pattern by Lion Brand Yarn for the purposes of designing the Cute Paw Print Square crochet pattern. I’ve been using Basic Stitch yarn for years and I love it. It works up really well and I love it for color work like this or the Torrance Mug Rug crochet pattern. This post contains affiliate links. • Blocking is suggested for this pattern.
  • The odd rows are the right side.
  • This whole pattern is worked in sc, so the instructions will only tell you the number and the color; ie: “5” highlighted in cream means sc 5 times in your cream color.
