Rainbow Layer Cake Basket Free Crochet Pattern

Learn to make the fun, bright, and striped Rainbow Layer Cake Basket from a free crochet pattern by Divine Debris

Happy June friends! Long time followers around here know that June means Pride month and a new rainbow pattern. And even though I moved in April and still feel all discombobulated, I couldn’t miss the opportunity for a new Pride design – so say hello to the brand new Rainbow Layer Cake Basket.

In addition to new rainbow patterns for June, you know I love to make baskets all year long. I just love how easy they are to make, how customizable they are, and how useful. Right now I’m looking at my new basket, with the skeins of yarn I plan on making another new rainbow pattern with, just sitting at the edge of the couch. It’s neat to me that it’s something I made and I already get to use. And I’ll use it over and over again. So rad!

Like most of my baskets, this pattern is worked from the bottom up in 3 sections – the base, the sides, and the handles. All the sections are worked in the round with a slip st into the first st of the round and each round starts with a ch 1, turn and you begin in the first st. And this easy structure makes this pattern easy to customize – feel free to add or subtract rounds from the base to make the basket smaller or add more repeats to the sides to make it taller, or even add more or subtract sts to make the handles larger or smaller. Or you can add a round of forward crab stitches like I did on my Clair Basket to add a “ooh” element to the basket top.

Now many of my other baskets were made with Hue + Me by Lion Brand Yarn but this one isn’t, it’s made with Mogollón 7 by Rosas Crafts which is on the thinner side for a bulky weight yarn. Just make sure you check your gauge against mine or keep in mind that yours could be larger if you use a thicker bulky when you make this design. Or you can make this basket with worsted weight yarn and it’ll be a nice, yet smaller, basket that is perfect for a dresser or a desk. It’s totally up to you.

I hope you like this week’s pattern my friends. Remember to be kind to each other but don’t take any BS. And that the first Pride was a riot, not a corporate sponsored snoozefest.

Notes

  • The gauge is not super critical for this pattern, but to keep your sides standing use a hook that will get you the closest to the gauge as possible.
  • This basket is worked from the bottom up in 3 sections: the Base, the Sides, and the Handles.
  • There are turns on each rnd.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the rnds does not count as a stitch.
  • The instructions for the Sides tell you to “drop” color B but fasten off the other colors, this is because you can carry color B up the inside of the basket if you would like and not fasten off. Conversely, you can fasten off color B, this will not affect the final look.
  • The sample in the photos was made using 8 colors: Color A is black, color B is tan, color C is purple, color D is blue, color E is green, color F is yellow, color G is orange, and color H is red. Mogollón 7 by Rosas Crafts was used for all colors.
