The Free Claire Basket Crochet Pattern – Get Stripy

[Image description] Yellow and white striped Claire Basket sits on a black shelf against a cream background, with 2 skeins of yarn on the right side of the photo

You know what? I think I should have declared 2023 a “big year for baskets” like I said 2022 was a “big year for mushrooms” because I have made so many baskets I don’t even know what to do with them. But luckily that’s my problem to deal with and yours to benefit from. Especially because this week’s new release is the Claire Basket crochet pattern.

Like I was saying above, this year has already been super good for baskets (as was last year if I’m being honest) and I don’t want the party to stop and that’s why I designed the Claire Basket. Don’t you just love those big bold stripes? Which I think you could eliminate and just do the basket in one color if you’d like… that would have to be up to you but I really like the hard horizontal lines they make.

So this basket is worked from the bottom up, in the round. This is my favorite way to make baskets because it keeps the seam straight (for me at least) and really allows for some fun bits of texture. Like with the Claire Basket here, the back and forth in the round allows the kind of wavy break with the hdc/ slip st rows to really come alive, which I think is also helped with the color blocking. It adds dimension to a very simple and easy to make basket in my opinion. Also, I just like working in the round 😀 it’s fun. Don’t you think?

I always like to use a smaller hook than suggest on the yarn packaging when I’m making baskets, especially with this bulky yarn. It helps to make the stitches nice and tight which in turn helps to keep the sides standing. Now, I usually keep my baskets full with yarn or wips so the sides standing isn’t a huge issue but just in case it is for you, I’d suggest going down a hook size when you’re making this basket to see if that helps. Just take lots of breaks, bulky yarn can be hard on the hands, especially with smaller hooks.
Oh! And don’t forget to check out the kit from Lion Brand Yarn or buy this pattern on Ravelry.
And remember to be kind to each other, wear and wash your masks and don’t tolerate bigotry any time of year. Happy June Pride month!

Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by Lion Brand Yarn for the purposes of designing the Claire Basket crochet pattern, with compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but I always enjoy using this yarn, I’ve used it many times, I really love making home decor items with the Hue + Me yarn. If you purchase yarn through any of the links in this post, I will be compensated. You can purchase a kit for this pattern from Lion Brand Yarn as well

Materials

Gauge

  • 12 sc x 14 rows = 4”

Terms/ Stitches used

  • Sk: Skip
  • St: Stitch
  • Ch: Chain
  • Magic circle
  • Rnd: Round
  • RS: Right side
  • Sc: Single crochet
  • Slip st: Slip stitch
  • BLO: Back loop only
  • Hdc: Half Double Crochet
  • Join: Join rnds with a slip st
  • Fcs: Forward Crab Stitch (explained below)

Notes

  • Forward crab stitch (fcs):  Insert your hook into the stitch, pull up a loop, turn your hook clockwise once so you twist the stitch, yarn over, pull through the 2 loops on your hook. Also called a Twisted Single Crochet. This stitch is like a crab stitch, only you work it forward.
  • The gauge is not super critical for this pattern, but to keep your sides standing use a hook that will get you the closest to the gauge as possible.
  • Don’t make your slip sts (not the join, the ones within the rnds) too tight or it may make it difficult to work back into.
  • This pattern is worked from the bottom up in 3 sections: the Base, the Sides, and the Handles.
  • There are turns on each rnd.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the rnds does not count as a stitch.
  • The sample in the photos was made using 2 skeins of Hue + Me by Lion Brand Yarn in the color Mustard and 1 skein of Salt.
