For what feels like forever, I’ve been working on a wall hanging series for Halloween. I was super excited about it, got lots of designs done and even got them tested and then… my attention-span dropped out and I started on some more projects. I never forgot about the Halloween Wall Hanging series though and this week I’m releasing the free Jack-o-lantern one to go along with the four paid designs. I hope that you’re still interested in tapestry crochet designs and give these a try, because I really like them and think they’re fun ways to decorate.

You can purchase an ad-free downloadable pdf in my Ravelry shop to help me continue bringing you free patterns weekly.

Level:

Intermediate (need to know tapestry crochet)

Materials:

Gauge:

  • G: 4.5” x 4.5” = 19 dcs x 9 rows

Terms/ stitches used:

  • RS: right side
  • Ch: chain
  • St: stitch
  • Slip st: slip stitch
  • Sc: single crochet
    Ravelry link

Notes:

  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the rows does not count as a stitch.
  • This pattern is worked back and forth with a turn at the beginning/ end of the row.
  • This pattern is worked from the bottom up.
  • When attaching the dowel, you crochet around the dowel into the stitches below, this keeps it in place.
  • You need to know how to create a slip knot on your hook  for this pattern.
  • All of the stitches in this pattern are single crochets, because of this the instructions only tells you how many stitches to do in what color, this is what the number in the parenthesis means.
  • The finished item might be a big misshapen and the sides might curl (mine did) so you’re probably going to need to block this before you hang it.
  • The inactive yarn yarn is carried under the active yarn, but bobbins were used. The orange yarn was the only yarn carried through the pattern, I used bobbins for the yellow, black and green colors. Here’s a great tutorial on color changes.
  • Also check out this post about tapestry crochet from Moogly, it’s helpful.
  • Color A is black, Color B is orange, Color C is yellow, and Color D is green.

Finished measurements:

  • Height: 11.5″ (top of dowel to point)
  • Width: 13.25″

You’ll almost definitely want to block your finished piece, I did in all the hangings I did. I hope you like this design and check out the new ones in my Ravelry shop

So, ta-da! There it is. I hope you like this design and give it a go if you haven’t tried tapestry to this point. I’m already trying to think of Winter designs, because while Fall is my favorite time of year, I do like Winter. 😀

See ya next week.

I have completed 3 Pumpkin wall hangings so far. They are a fun challenge. I modified the top because I didn't want to mail sticks. So I made 5 chain loops and slip stitched into every third single crochet. It didn't come out even on the end, but no one will know that but me. The dowel or stick from a tree can be easily threaded through. I have 3 more to make.

Thanks for sharing the pattern. I have enjoyed learning new crochet techniques.
