Free Gloria Ghost Scarf Crochet Pattern – Glory to Ghosties!

Can you feel it? Fall is definitely in the air. Or at least it is where I live, where the leaves are changing and there’s a chill in the mornings. I absolutely love it and want more! Which is why I’ve been all about the Halloween fun this month on my blog. And this week’s new release is no exception – say hello to the Gloria Ghost Scarf crochet pattern.

It’s been really ghost heavy this month, with the Ghosts of the Blue Lagoon Wall Hanging, Glenda Ghost Bag, and the Gertrude Ghost Pullover all coming out the last few weeks I thought “why not go for more ghosts” and designed this new scarf. And then when Lion Brand Yarn offered some of their DIY Glow to really make this scarf magic, I knew it was meant to be.

[Image description] A dark photo of the glowing Gloria Ghost Scarf crochet pattern, showing how the ghost look when they glow in the dark.

Now don’t let the color work of the scarf give you pause, it’s pretty easy tbh. Further down this post I have some tips on doing the color work. Like a lot of my designs, I didn’t carry the yarn across the rows because I prefer to keep the ghost really readable (especially with that glow in the dark yarn). So I used separate pieces of yarn in the body of the ghost, one for each section of color A and 1 for the center section of color B. If you drop the unused yarn down the wrong side and pick it up again on the next row, it’s basically seamless.

Overall, this scarf is really easy. It’s worked in 2 pieces from the ghost towards the center. The section past the ghost, which is all extended single crochet, is just repeats of 3 rows of esc and a row of half double crochet clusters. The “how to” on those stitches are below if you’ve never made one. But I did the mixture of stitches because I wanted the rest of the scarf to be as cool as the ghosts. 😀 Can you blame me?

Anyway, I hope you like this new scarf. I’m so proud of me for all my ghosts this year. I really love them all so much and I hope you do too. And don’t forget you can get this scarf as a kit from Lion Brand here.

Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by Lion Brand Yarn for the purposes of designing the Gloria Ghost Scarf crochet pattern, with compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but I’ve used Basic Stitch is one of my favorite yarns to use and I love it. And DIY Glow works up so well, just make sure to charge it really good for a bright pop of color.

  • US G (4.00 mm) crochet hook
  • Worsted/ medium/ size #4 weight yarn
  • Notions: scissors, measuring tape, yarn needle

Gauge

  • 14 esc x 12 rows = 4” (blocked)

Terms/ Stitches used

  • St: Stitch
  • Ch: Chain
  • RS: Right side
  • Esc: Extended single crochet (explained below)
  • Hdcc: Half double crochet cluster (explained below)

Notes

  • You can purchase the easy to print version of this pattern for a fee in my Ravelry shop.
  • Esc (extended single crochet): insert the hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, draw through one loop, yarn over, pull through the 2 loops on the hook.
  • Half double crochet cluster (Hdcc): Yarn over, insert hook into st, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, insert hook into the next st, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through all 5 loops on your hook, ch 1. This is basically a hdc2tog and a ch 1 counting as one st. When you work back into this st, use both the hdc2tog and the ch 1.
  • This pattern is worked in 2 halves: the right side and the left side. Once both halves are completed, you seam the halves together along their final row in your preferred method of seaming.
  • The individual scarf halves are worked from the other side of the ghost graphing until the center of the scarf, in rows with a turn at the beginning of the row.
  • To conserve yarn and ensure the ghost is seen clearly, color A (charcoal) is not carried through the ghost on Rows 5 – 34. Instead, separate strands of color A are used on either side of the ghost, which has its own strand of color B (white) in the center. There are tips within the pattern to help your ghost be as neat as possible.
  • For the scarf halves: begin with a ch 27 in color A, turn, and start in the 2nd ch from the hook. Each row begins with a “ch 1, turn” and all st counts are 26 esc.
  • This scarf is purposely long, if you’d like it shorter feel free to remove rows from the non-graph portions. For a child size, a good rule of thumb is to make the scarf as long as the child is tall.
  • This whole pattern is worked in esc, so the instructions for the ghosts portions will only tell you the number and the color; ie: “10” highlighted in gray means esc 10 times in your gray color.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the rows does not count as a stitch.
  • In the photos: color A is gray (Heather Charcoal in Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn) and color B is white (DIY Glow by Lion Brand Yarn). Buy the kit here.

For Rows 3 – 4, colors A and B are carried across the scarf but starting Row 5, attach a second strand of A so you no longer need to carry both colors (this helps the ghost appear as neat as possible).
See the photo above for an example.
