Hello and welcome to week seven of the HodgePodge Crochet hosted 2016 Afghan Sampler CAL! Materials:

  • Worsted/ size #4 / medium weight yarnRavelry link
  • US J (6.00 mm) crochet hook
    • or whatever hook gets you to the gauge 25 sc = 7″
  • Tapestry/ yarn needle

Terms/stitches used:

  • Ch: chain
  • St: stitch
  • Slip st: slip st
  • Sc: single crochet
  • Hdc: half double crochet
  • Fphdc: front post half double crochet
  • Dc: double crochet .
  • Fpdc: front post double crochet
  • Tr: treble crochet
  • Fptr: front post treble crochet

Notes:

  • This pattern is worked in the round, where the last st is secure to the first st.
  • The ch 2 at the beginning of rows 3 – 5 does not count as a stitch.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of rows 7, and 10 – 11 does not count as a stitch.
  • This pattern requires blocking to perfectly create an 8” square. There are instructions on this at the end of the pattern. This square was wet blocked but you can also steam block it.

Finished product dimensions:

  • 8” x 8” square (including edging)

Pattern instructions:

Row 1: Ch 4, slip st to create a circle.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as a dc), dc 11 times into the circle, slip st into the top of the original ch 3 to secure – 12 dcs
Row 3: Ch 2, fpdc around the first st twice, ch 1, dc into the next 2 sts, ch 1, *fpdc around the next st twice, ch 1, dc into the next 2 sts, ch 1,* repeat from * to * twice more, slip st into the first fpdc to secure – 8 fpdcs, 8 dcs
Row 4: Ch 2, fpdc once around the first fpdc, ch 2, fpdc 3 times around the next fpdc, ch 1,  skip the next 2 dcs, *fpdc once around the next fpdc, ch 2, fpdc 3 times around the next fpdc, ch 1, skip the next 2 dcs,* repeat from * to * twice more, slip st into the first fpdc to secure – 16 fpdcs
Row 5: Ch 2, fpdc once around the first fpdc, ch 2, hdc once into the next 2 fpdcs, fpdc twice around the next fpdc, ch 1, *fpdc around the next fpdc, ch 2, hdc once into the next 2 fpdcs, fpdc twice around the next fpdc, ch 1,* repeat from * to * twice more, slip st into the first fpdc to secure – 12 fpdcs, 8 hdcs
Row 6: Ch 3 (does not count as a stitch), fptr once around the first fpdc, ch 5, skip next 2 hdcs, hdc into the next fpdc, fptr twice around the next fpdc, ch 1, *fptr around the next fpdc, ch 5, skip next 2 hdcs, hdc into the next fpdc, fptr twice around the next fpdc,* repeat from * to * twice more, slip st into the first fptr to secure – 12 fptrs, 4 hdcs
Row 7: Ch 1, sc once into the first fptr, sc 7 times into the next ch 5 space, skip the next hdc, sc once into the next 2 fptrs, sc twice into the next ch 1 space,* sc once into the next fptr, sc 7 times into the next ch 5 space, skip the next hdc, sc once into the next 2 fptrs, sc twice into the ch 1 space,* repeat from * to * twice more, slip st into the first sc to secure – 48 scs

Row 8: Ch 4 (counts as tr here and throughout) tr 5 times into the same st as join, ch 7, fphdc around the first st you fpdc-ed around from row 2 (the blue arrow in the photo on the right, this is the stitch you fpdc-ed around when working row 3), ch 7, skip 11 sts, *[6 tr, ch 2, 6 tr] into the next st, ch 7, fphdc around the next st you fpdc-ed around from row 1, ch 7, skip 11 sts,* repeat from * to * twice more, tr 6 times into the first st, ch 2, slip st into the top of the ch 4 to secure – 48 trs, 4 fphdcs
Row 9: Slip st into the ch 2 space before you secured row 8, ch 4, tr into the next 4 trs, *ch 7, skip the next 2 trs, skip to the next [6 tr, ch 2, 6 tr], skip the first 2 trs, tr into the next 4 trs, [tr, ch 2, tr] into the next ch 2 space, tr into the next 4 trs,* repeat from * to * twice more, ch 7, skip the next 2 trs, skip to the next [6 tr, ch 2, 6 tr], skip the first 2 trs, tr into the next 4 trs, tr into the next ch 2 space, ch 2, slip st into the top of the original ch 4 to secure – 40 trs

 

Edging:

Row 10: Ch 1, sc twice into the ch 2 space right before where you secured the previous row, sc into the next 5 sts, sc 13 times into the ch 7 space, sc into the next 5 sts, *sc 5 times into the next ch 2 space, sc into the next 5 sts, sc 13 times into the ch 7 space, sc into the next 5 sts,* repeat from * to * twice more, sc into the 3 more times into the ch 2 space from the beginning of this row, slip st into the first st to secure – 112 scs
Row 11: Ch 1, sc into the next 27 sts, sc 3 times into the next st, *sc into the next 27 sts, sc 3 times into the next st,* repeat from * to * twice more, slip st into the first st to secure – 120 scs
Fasten off, weave in your ends.

Blocking:

This square was blocked using wet blocking. Wet the whole square and then stretch to the size you want, then pin it in place and allow it to dry completely (as seen in photo on the right).
