Not So Prickly, the Free Cute Cactus Earrings Crochet Pattern

[Image description] A pair of the Cute Cactus Earrings lays flat on a cement background

I think it might be a tie between what I like better, cacti or mushrooms. This month I’ve already released the Sedona Cactus Mug Rug and I’m planning another cactus for next month. I think that means I’ve got to work on a mushroom design for July to even it all out. Anyway… sorry for that long intro, allow me to introduce this week’s newbie – the Cute Cactus Earrings crochet pattern.
Ever since I made the Stuffed Mushrooms Earrings last year (which I get loads of compliments on every time I wear them) I knew I wanted to make some very fun and in your face cactus earrings. And honestly, I think these fit so well. I did design the Sedona Cactus Earrings last month but they’re more of an artistic take on cactus earrings, these are for people like me who don’t want to be subtle with our accessories.

Unlike the Stuffed Mushrooms Earrings, I didn’t want to double up on these and make them more ami like, although you totally could, just make 2 of the Pot and Cactus parts and then add the numbs after you seam them together. I just wanted these to be flat but eye-catching, which is why I pulled out my puffy paint to add the flowers. Don’t they look great and really pop against the green? I wish the part that I like the most wasn’t something that took me seconds to do. That’s crafting though, ya know?
And like I address in the notes, I did change the way that I made the Pot to make it easier. Initially I had 2 foundation single crochet stitches in there to extend the row but when I was writing the pattern I realized that wasn’t the easiest way to make these and I changed it. I think this way, of working the Pot from the widest to the smallest, is the best and requires no new stitches to learn. And then I worked it up as an applique (which I love to do for earrings because they photograph better) and it worked fabulously. So, all good on that front and now I have a cute applique I need to add flowers to. Win on all fronts.

So yeah, I hope you like this week’s new free pattern and enjoy the cactus kick I’m on, it might last a while. As always to be kind to each other, wash your and wear masks, and stay safe friends <3 <3

Finishing
Like I do with all my earrings, I stiffened these with fabric stiffener. Just wet them down with the stiffener (I dilute it with water) and lay them flat to dry completely. When they’re dry, attach the findings, such as jump rings, and wear them.
If you’d like you can also add the tiny flowers here with Puffy Paint or little scraps of other yarn. Or not at all. I like the pop of color from the flowers. You can also make needles the same way if you’d like to add those.
