More squares? Why yes, I don’t mind if I do. Because what’s better for Halloween than more 😀 I always say more is more, ya know? And this week’s Cat and Bat Halloween Squares are definitely more.
Earlier this year when I was designing the Cat Lady Bag I made like 5 (or more, I can’t quite remember now) different designs. I had so many ideas I wanted to work them all up and see which ones worked for the bag. Ultimately I settled on 3 squares for that bag and later released the ones I didn’t use for the bag (they became the Cute Cats Squares), because why not. Ya know? Shouldn’t let the other fun squares go to waste. And that’s the inspiration for this week’s release – the B sides for the Patchwork Halloween Bag.
Using Stitch Fiddle I designed these squares to work from the bottom up in rows. They’re not unlike the any of the other squares in the Patchwork Halloween Bag. They also have the same stitch count so if you’d like to add these to your collection of squares, that will totally work.
Below you’re going to find some photos of the Candy Corn Halloween Square (because I forgot to take wip photos of these squares but the technique is the same). I included them so you can get a bit more insight into how I like to work my squares. I primarily used tapestry for this one (color A working over color B) and I didn’t carry color B to the ends of the row. I don’t like that look and think it bulks up the ends. But do what works for you and what you’re most comfortable using.
I do hope you like this week’s release. These extra squares are fun and absolutely would look fantastic with the rest of the bag but didn’t fit my original vision of the Patchwork Halloween Bag. But I didn’t want them to go to waste, so here they are.
Thank you so much for subscribing and have a great Halloween season! Take care of yourselves <3 <3
Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by Lion Brand Yarn for the purposes of designing the Patchwork Halloween Bag and the Cat and Bat Halloween Squares crochet patterns, with compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but this was the first time I tried DIYarn and I really enjoyed it, it’s a great worsted weight yarn and feels very durable. Notes on carrying yarn on the Cat and Bat Halloween Squares crochet pattern
For yarn conservation and clarity purposes, all colors other than the primary color are not carried throughout the squares. Instead I used “bobbins” or individual stands of color for the other color or colors for all the squares.
Below are 2 close up photos of the Candy Corn Square (because it’s worked the same as both the Cat and Bat Squares) showing the colors of the square being used at the same time. Black is the primary color and used throughout the square and orange/ yellow is the secondary color and is only used where it’s needed. Throughout the square the primary color is crocheted over when the secondary color is called for. When the secondary color is not in use (regardless of which side is facing) it’s dropped down the WS.
When carrying the inactive yarn with the RS facing, make sure it’s behind the previous row’s stitches. And when carrying the inactive yarn with the WS facing, make sure it’s in front of the previous row’s stitches.
Don’t pull the carried yarn too tight or let it hang loose (try to keep it even with the stitches), as it can distort your square’s final look. Blocking may help even out some distortion or bulkiness of the center that may occur.
Remember: Your squares may not be perfectly square when you’re done, but the border and blocking (which is highly suggested) can help this. The seaming can also even out some size inconsistency.

Would you have a pattern that teaches how to crochet with more than one color? In other words, how can I learn to crochet with more than one color?
Thank you, Debbie Campbell

I do not, I only have patterns not tutorials like that. I would suggest Googling "tapestry" or "intarsia" crochet for help with that.
Take care, Amber
