Like I said in the Skull and Ghost Halloween Squares post, I decided to break up the graphs I used in the Patchwork Halloween Bag for those who only want a specific square. On this post you’re going to find the Candy Corn and Jack O’Lantern Halloween Squares crochet graphs. I hope you enjoy them.
Second to the ghost and skull patterns, these are perfectly Halloween. Candy corn, despite how much I do not like it, is absolutely for Halloween. And who carved jack o’lanterns as a kid? Most people (I assume, I know I did) so when I was thinking of the 4 different squares for the Patchwork Halloween Bag I knew I needed to include that design as well. And that’s how the Candy Corn and Jack O’Lantern Halloween Squares came to be.
Using Stitch Fiddle I designed these squares from the bottom up. They’re not unlike the Skull and Ghost Halloween Squares, I wanted to make these quick as possible to make. They’re worked back and forth in rows (with a ch 1, turn, at the beginning of the row) and I use the secondary colors where they’re used but not all the way across the row. It can make the square bulky but some steam blocking can help even that out.
Below you’re going to find some photos of the Candy Corn Halloween Square and I included them so you can get a bit more insight into how I like to work my squares. I primarily used tapestry for this one (color A working over color B) and I didn’t carry color B to the ends of the row. I don’t like that look and think it bulks up the ends. But do what works for you and what you’re most comfortable using.
I do hope you like this week’s release and how I broke it up. You can still get all the squares in the pdf or blog post for the Patchwork Halloween Bag or you can just buy the ones you’d like, separately. That way you can make Halloween as you’d like 🙂
Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by Lion Brand Yarn for the purposes of designing the Patchwork Halloween Bag and the Candy Corn and Jack O’Lantern Halloween Squares crochet patterns, with compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but this was the first time I tried DIYarn and I really enjoyed it, it’s a great worsted weight yarn and feels very durable. Notes on carrying yarn on the Candy Corn and Jack O’Lantern Halloween Squares crochet pattern
For yarn conservation and clarity purposes, all colors other than the primary color are not carried throughout the squares. Instead I used “bobbins” or individual stands of color for the other color or colors for all the squares.
Below are 2 close up photos of the Candy Corn Square showing the colors of the square being used at the same time. Black is the primary color and used throughout the square and orange/ yellow is the secondary color and is only used where it’s needed. Throughout the square the primary color is crocheted over when the secondary color is called for. When the secondary color is not in use (regardless of which side is facing) it’s dropped down the WS.
When carrying the inactive yarn with the RS facing, make sure it’s behind the previous row’s stitches. And when carrying the inactive yarn with the WS facing, make sure it’s in front of the previous row’s stitches.
Don’t pull the carried yarn too tight or let it hang loose (try to keep it even with the stitches), as it can distort your square’s final look. Blocking may help even out some distortion or bulkiness of the center that may occur.
Remember: Your squares may not be perfectly square when you’re done, but the border and blocking (which is highly suggested) can help this. The seaming can also even out some size inconsistency.
