Hi there! Are you ready for Christmas? I have to be honest with you, I’ve been really struggling with motivation this month after weeks of not even touching a crochet hook, I decided to sweep those cobwebs out of my mind with a fun and easy design, the Cute Tree Garland Crochet Pattern.
Now you might already have noticed, this design is a variation on classic design if mine (from 2014!) the Christmas Tree Applique pattern. As I said in the opening paragraph, I haven’t been feeling super motivated and I didn’t really want to “design” something new, instead I wanted to make something fun but comfortable. And so I designed to make a garland with the tree applique as the main design and I love how it turned out.
I don’t know about you but I love when I’m able to use up some yarn that I got for a specific pattern and have had on hand ever since. For this one I used up some Pound of Love I have had in my stash since the Mushroom Love Blanket (green and tan) and the Cat Moon Rising Blanket (brown). I wanted to go for a simple look, something very chill but still very cute, and so these partial skeins of yarn worked out perfectly. Feel free to make your little trees in any size yarn or color you have on hand, this pattern is super adaptable.
I did make the pattern for this larger than I did in the original design from 2014. The smaller ones are super cute but I just thought larger trees would look better, ya know? And you can adapt this design to any size you may need by adding chs to the first row, just make sure you keep an odd count for your chains and an even count for your first row – IE: ch 17 and have 16 sc. After that you just work the design as the original pattern states (row of hdc/ slip st, decrease row with sc, row of hdc/ slip st, etc…) And absolutely add some “ornaments” or surface crochet or whatever makes you happy to really customize your design.
Anyway, I hope you are having a fun Christmas season and find this little blog post inspirational. You can also use these trees for present toppers, earrings (as I show in the original pattern), and basically anything you can think of. I only did 9 trees myself but you can make tons and have huge garlands 😀 It would be amazing!
Thank you, as always, for your support and I hope you like this garland. If you’d like to buy the pdf for the Christmas Tree Applique, you can pick it up on Ravelry.
Please note: As I said above, I was provided Pound of Love yarn to design previous patterns, with compensation, but not this design explicitly. I wasn’t provided this yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but I do love this yarn and use it all the time. It’s one of my favorite yarns for blankets and I will always reach for it for a fun worsted weight project.

Notes
- This pattern is worked from the bottom up on the tree, then you flip the whole thing over and make the trunk.
- The ch-1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.
- I used puffy paint for the decoration but you can use anything you want to customize your finished trees.
- If you’d like to make the tree larger, just add more sts to the first row (the chain row) and make sure your final stitch count is odd. Then work the pattern as written (hdc and slip st repeat then decrease and sc row) until you decrease to one st. Add a trunk to the other side of row 1 in the center of the row, as you’d like.
- Color A is green (or tan) and color B is brown. I used stash yarn (Pound of Love by Lion Brand Yarn).

Christmas Tree Trunk
With the RS facing you, flip your tree so you’re working into the other side of Row 1. Skip 6 sts from the end and pull up a loop in the next st with color B.
Row 1: B: Ch 1, sc into the next 4 sts – 4 sc
Rows 2 – 3: Ch 1, turn, sc across – 4 sc
Fasten off, weave in all your ends.
Garland
Once you have all 9 trees (or more if you’d like) use color B (brown) to make a chain to connect them together.
What I did: Begin with a ch 60 and then slip st into the first green tree, *ch 20, slip st into the first tan tree, ch 20, slip st into the next green tree,* repeat from * to * until you’re done with all your trees, then ch 60 again and fasten off.
Optional: If you’d like to reinforce your garland, slip st into the top 2 loops of the connecting chain you just made (as you can see above) or you could sc into each st across. It’s up to you and what kind of design you want to make.
And here’s the garland laying on a brown board. I don’t have a great wall to show it off right now but I’ll find one 😀 I hope you like this pattern and are inspired to make one too. Just remember you can make as many or as few trees as you’d like.
