Hi there! With today being the last day of September I decided to sneak on more pattern into the month… because I had a fun idea. I decided to make the Gwendoline Ghost Squares crochet patterns because I thought it was just too cute to be stuck in 1 square style.
As you may know, I just released the Gwendoline Ghost Bag using the tapestry crochet version of this square. I love how it worked up and think it’s a super cute design but couldn’t get the idea out of my head that it would be super cute in C2C too. So, as I’m want to do, I made a second version and decided to release it separately because it’s the season to be giving, ya know?
As always, I used Stitch Fiddle to design both of these squares. Below you’re going to find graphs for both of the designs – white and purple for the tapestry crochet version of the pattern and orange, white, and black for the c2c version. They’re both very similar but also different and fun. You could absolutely mix up the colors you use and add a 3rd color to the tapestry version if you want. Below I also included notes on how I crocheted over the yarn on the tapestry square and that’s quite different from how I made the C2C (I used bobbins). Feel free to find what works for you within the techniques.
Seeing as how I already have a bag (Gwendoline Ghost Bag here) but I’m thinking about making a pillow cover with the C2C and maybe a blanket (that’s a next year problem though). You could also make a scarf from the tapestry ghost (seaming them top/ bottom like the Wake the Dead Scarf) or just leave them as coasters. Just have fun and get creative friends!
Overall I hope you like this pattern back and it makes you excited to make something for Halloween. If you use them, I’d love to hear what you do with them in the comments. That’s always so fun 😀 And as always, if you like my patterns here and would like a pdf copy (which includes the written instructions) it is available on Ravelry. Happy almost October!
Please note:I was provided the yarn for this pattern by Lion Brand Yarn for the purposes of designing other patterns but I used the left over to make the Gwendoline Ghost Squares crochet pattern, without compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but I love Pound of Love for all sorts of patterns. It’s super useful.

Notes
- As is industry standard, this pattern is just a free graph and not written instructions but you can purchase the pattern for a fee in my Ravelry shop.
- This post contains 2 patterns, a C2C square and a tapestry crochet square.
- The C2C square is worked from the bottom right corner to the top left corner.
- Each C2C block consists of 3 double crochets and a ch-3. The instructions will only tell you the number and the color; ie: “5” highlighted in orange means make 5 C2C blocks (3 dc each) in your orange color.
- You will need to know how to change colors in a C2C for this pattern.
- Rows 1 – 26 you will be increasing and rows 27 – 51 you will be decreasing.
- The odd-numbered rows are down up and the even-numbered rows are up down. The odd-numbered rows are the Right Side.
- The tapestry square is worked in rows (with a ch 1 turn) from the bottom up in sc.
- The ch 1 at the beginning of the rows does not count as a stitch.
- The whole square is worked in sc, so the instructions will only tell you the number and the color; ie: “15” highlighted in purple means sc 15 times in your purple color.
- The tapestry square begins with ch 27 in your main color.
- In the photos: Color A is orange, color B is white, and color C is black. I changed the colors for the graphs from the colors in the photos, that way the 2 graphs are easy to distinguish.

Notes on carrying yarn on the Gwendoline Ghost Tapestry Square crochet pattern
For yarn conservation and clarity purposes, all colors other than the primary color are not carried throughout the squares. Instead I used “bobbins” or individual stands of color for the other color or colors for all the squares.
Below are 2 close up photos of the square showing the 2 colors of the square being used at the same time. Black is the primary color and used throughout the square and white is the secondary color and is only used where it’s needed. Throughout the square the primary color is crocheted over when the secondary color is called for. When the secondary color is not in use (regardless of which side is facing) it’s dropped down the WS.
When carrying the inactive yarn with the RS facing, make sure it’s behind the previous row’s stitches. And when carrying the inactive yarn with the WS facing, make sure it’s in front of the previous row’s stitches.
Don’t pull the carried yarn too tight or let it hang loose (try to keep it even with the stitches), as it can distort your square’s final look. Blocking may help even out some distortion or bulkiness of the center that may occur.
Remember: Your squares may not be perfectly square when you’re done, but the border and blocking (which is highly suggested) can help this. The seaming can also even out some size inconsistency.

Gwendoline Ghost Tapestry Square Graph
Graph Key: Color A is purple and color B is purple. I used Pound of Love by Lion Brand Yarn for this pattern. Please note: I changed the colors on the graph (from orange to purple) to distinguish it from the C2C square’s graph.
For the square: begin with a ch 27 in color A, turn, and start in the 2nd ch from the hook. Each row begins with a “ch 1, turn” and all st counts are 26 sc.
Border
With the RS facing you, join color C in the first st on the other side of Row 1 of the square.
Row 1: C: Ch 1, sc into the next 26 sts, ch 1 at the corner, sc into the next 26 row ends, ch 1 at the corner, sc into the next 26 sts of Row 26, ch 1 at the corner, sc down the next 26 row ends, ch 1 at the corner, join with a slip st – 104 sc, 4 ch-1 spaces
Fasten off, weave in your ends. Block the square so it measures 5.9” x 5.9”.
Gwendoline Ghost C2C Square Graph

on the corner (this can be a ch-3 space or a dc), [ch 3 and skip the next block, *sc into the space between the blocks, ch 3 and skip the next block,* repeat from * to * across until you get to the last block, sc into the last st of the block], rotate your square and repeat from [ to ] twice more, ch 3 and skip the next block, *sc into the space between the block, ch 3 and skip the next block,* repeat from * to * across until you get to the last block, slip st into the first st.
