Free Kieran Basket Crochet Pattern – Store More Yarn!

Happy September! Is it starting to look like Fall where you live? Sadly, it is not here but I’m still holding out hope and making Fall themed items for when the weather finally turns cooler. But luckily baskets are in no matter the season and this week’s new pattern is perhaps my favorite basket yet – say hello to the Kieran Basket crochet pattern.

This cutie is a new addition to the Kieran Line (which I’m loving more and more right now, in fact you’ll be seeing a pumpkin in this coming next month). After last month’s Kieran Mug Rug I got the idea for this basket but I had to think of a way to adapt the texture to a basket without the holes, which work great for a mug rug but less so for a basket. So, of course, I added one of my favorite stitches ever – hdc into the back third loop. It’s such a fun and easy way to add some texture and break up blocks of other stitches. And it’s one of the main features of my Diana Basket too, so I thought “why not combine these ideas.” And I’m glad I did.

Like my other baskets, this design is worked in the round from the bottom up, with a slip st into the first st of the rnd. I like to turn with designs like this because I prefer to keep the seam as straight as possible with turns and, most importantly, this texture wouldn’t look right other wise. The sc/dc combo where you work back into the same st (sc into sc, dc into dc) needs that difference between the front of the st and the back of the st to really make some fantastic texture. Doesn’t it kinda look like the stitches are moving? Maybe that’s just me… 😀

Just remember to use the smallest hook that you can that feels comfortable, it’ll help keep your sides standing. I used a 5.00 mm hook for this and while it did make the yarn split a tiny bit, it does help to keep the sides standing even when I don’t have 5 or more other skeins of yarn in there (it can fit 4 – 5 skeins of Hue + Me comfortably, which is nice).

• US H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
• Size #5 bulky weight yarn
  • 2 colors
    • A (brown): 6.3 oz / 196 yds
    • B (cream): 4.4 oz/ 137 yds
  • I used Hue + Me by Lion Brand Yarn
• Notions: scissors, measuring tape, yarn needle

Gauge

• 12 sc/dc x 10 rows = 4” (see Notes)

Terms/ Stitches used

• Sk: Skip
• St: Stitch
• Ch: Chain
• Rnd: Round
• Magic circle
• RS: Right side
• Sc: Single crochet
• Dc: Double crochet
• BLO: Back loop only 
• Hdc: Half double crochet
• Join: Join rnds with a slip st
• BTLO: Back third loop only (explained below)

Notes

• Gauge is not super critical for this pattern, but to keep your sides standing use a 5.00 mm (or as close as you can get) to keep your sts tight.
• For gauge: Chain an even amount of chs that will give you an over 4” swatch (your row st count needs to be odd), sc into the 2nd ch from the hook, *dc into the next st, sc into the next st,* repeat from * to * across. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc into the first sc, *dc into the next dc, sc into the next sc,* repeat from * to * across. Repeat row 2 as many times as you need to get more than 4” swatch then measure a blocked section.
• Back third loop only (BTLO): When looking at the front of the st you will have the 2 loops on top of the hdc (the V on top), lean the st towards you and will see the third loop that runs along the back of the st. This is the loop you will work into. This st is also known as the Camel Stitch. Please note on the rnds where you work this st you will be looking at the back of the previous row’s hdc, so the third loop will be facing you.
• This pattern is worked from the bottom up in 3 sections: the Base, the Sides, and the Handles.
• The ch 1 at the beginning of some rnds does not count as a stitch.
• The ch 3 at the beginning of some rnds does count as a stitch.
• Color A is brown (Lion Brand Yarn Hue and Me in Terra) and color B is cream (Hue and Me in Salt).
