Happy July Square everyone!
Who else is having a ton & 1/2 fun with this project? Much of my fun for this project is seeing your projects on Ravelry and on Instagram. I just love seeing people making designs that started as just a little idea in my head. It really makes me feel connected to people all over, which is super important right now to me, after my move. I’m still feeling very unstable, very in transit, and that we’re still not “home” and seeing you all, out there, making my patterns, leaving sweet comments and just reaching out is really making me feel less like I’m floating in the universe. Does that make sense? It’s grounding me, making me feel like I’m a part of a community and not just doing this by myself.
What I’m trying to say is thank you, from the depths of my heart, thank you.
So this design is what I think of when I’m thinking of Summer – watermelons! Who else thinks that it’s not Summer until you bite into a juicy piece of watermelon? That when you think of hot weather you’re picturing bbq’s, running through sprinklers, family, and watermelon? Just me? 😉
I love, love! how this design turned out. I was so very excited to show if off when I got it that people have been seeing photos of it for months on my Instagram. I just love how that pink and green on the yellow background pops, it makes me happy and fills me with beautiful Summer vibes. I can’t wait to see your photos!

Materials

  • US H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
  • Aran/ medium/ size #4 weight yarn
  • Yarn needle

Gauge

  • 16 rows x 15 scs = 4”
    Ravelry link

Terms/stitches used

  • RS: right side
  • Ch: chain
  • St: stitch
  • Slip st: slip stitch
  • Sc: single crochet

Notes

  • This pattern is worked flat back and forth in rows, with a turn at the beginning/ end of the row, from the bottom up.
  • This square measures about 7.5″ unblocked and will come out with 8″ with a sc border (explained below). The photos do not feature a border.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.
  • Every stitch in this pattern is a single crochet. The directions will only tell you what color (ie: Color A, Color B, etc…) and the number in the parentheses tells you how many scs to make.
  • The use of bobbins like they did on Hodgepodge Crochet is suggested for this pattern.
  • Your square may need some light blocking.
  • You will need to know how to create a slipknot on your hook for this pattern.
  • In the example, the inactive yarn is carried behind the active. If this is confusing, you might want to check out the helpful Moogly video on tapestry.
  • Color A is yellow (Caron One Pound in Sunflower), color B is green (Caron One Pound in Grass Green), color C is white (Caron One Pound in White), color D is pink (Caron One Pound in Sunflower), and color E is black (misc stash color).
