Trudy Two-Tone Basket Free Crochet Pattern – Easy Home Decor

Learn to make the fun and easy textured Trudy Two-Tone Basket from a free crochet pattern by Divine Debris

Another month, another basket 😀 And you know what? I love it because baskets are one of my favorite things to decorate with and they’re so useful for storage. It’s why I design so many (see some baskets here) and why this week’s new pattern is the Trudy Two-Tone Basket 🙂

When it comes to baskets, I love to use bulky yarn and work from base up in sections. Many of my baskets are worked in the round because I like how they turn out and if you work each round with a “ch 1, turn” at the beginning like I do, it makes for a nice little seam in the back. And that’s exactly what I did with this week’s new pattern.

Now this is a really easy, basically beginner pattern, that anyone can make. Just make sure to join with a slip st at the end of each round. You wouldn’t believe how many questions on baskets I get that boil down to that, because someone is more used to working in continuous rounds and they didn’t realize this wasn’t continuous. I get the appeal but I’ve never been a fan of continuous rounds, I prefer to have the seam there. It’s the same reason I like garments with seams too, it gives it structure (in my opinion).

As for the basket itself, it’s really fun and simple. The base is just rounds of single crochet and the top (in white) is fun and textured but it’s a really easy texture to achieve – hdc and sc in one st, super simple. The design was influenced by the Lila Basket, because I love the hard contrast in color and texture, and the colors were inspired by the Claire Basket, which has been one of my most popular baskets to date (also that color combo is fab, don’t you think?). It’s one of my favorite things about crochet, how much range there is in just minor changes. It’s beautiful, don’t you think?

As I said above, I love using bulky yarns for baskets and for this one I used one of my favorite bulky yarns, Hue + Me by Lion Brand Yarn. It’s holds up well and makes a really great basket. If you want to adjust your yarn, feel free. Just make sure you use the smallest hooks you’re comfortable with, it keeps the sides tighter. I used H/ 5.00 mm and I / 5.50 mm hooks for this because of the texture and stitch requirements but the yarn label itself says to use a larger hook – but the smaller hook is how to keep the sides sturdy. That’s honestly the only trick I have to keeping the basket standing, tight stitches.

So, as we are now in the middle of May, I hope this basket is a fun design you can see yourself making during the warmer months. It’s easy and if you’re like me, it can hold your new wip 😀 Which is always a plus in my book. Take care and thank you so much for visiting.

Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by Lion Brand Yarn for the purposes of designing a kit and used it for the Trudy Two-Tone Basket crochet pattern, with compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but I love using Hue + Me for baskets, it works up so well and it’s super sturdy and the colors are fantastic! And I was commissioned to make this pattern and you can buy a kit for this pattern on Lion Brand’s website. This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase yarn through any of the links in this post, I may be compensated. And do not make videos using my patterns.

Notes

  • The pdf for this pattern is available on Ravelry.
  • To make a gauge swatch for I/ 5.50 mm hook: Row 1 – make a chain larger than 4” with an odd stitch count, sc and hdc into the 2nd ch from the hook, sk the next st, *sc and hdc into the next st, sk the next st,* repeat from * to * across. Rows 2 to however many rows you need to make the swatch 4” high – Ch 1, turn, sc and hdc into the first hdc, sk the next sc, *sc and hdc into the next hdc,* repeat from * to * across. Once your swatch is more than 4” x 4” measure the center.
  • The gauge is not super critical for this pattern, but to keep your sides standing use a hook that will get you the closest to the gauge as possible.
  • This pattern is worked from the bottom up in rounds in 3 sections: the Base, the Sides, and the Handles, with a “ch 1, turn,” at the beginning of each row. All sections are worked in the round with a slip st into the first st to join.
  • The ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • The H/ 5.00 mm hook is used for the Base and sc section of the Sides (made in yellow) and the I/ 5.50 mm hook is used fro the texture section of the Sides and Handles (made in white).
  • The sample for this pattern uses Hue + Me from Lion Brand Yarn: color A is yellow (Mustard) and color B is white (Salt). Check out the kit from Lion Brand Yarn here.
