If you’ve been following me for a while you know that when May and June roll around, I start planning and thinking about my annual Pride Month/ Rainbow pattern. Well, this year like the last couple of years I feel like I’m terribly unprepared. Just always playing a bit of catch up, as it were, but at least I’ve got a new Pride pattern, Rainbow Heart Coaster crochet pattern for y’all today so you can make some cutie designs before June officially starts.

As I’ve said before in so many of my coaster pattern posts, I love making designs like this. I think they work up fun, they’re useful for everyday life, and they make great components of larger projects. You can make them into bags (like the Field of Flowers Bag or Cat Lady Bag) or a wall hanging (like I did with my Galactic Glow Trio, that’s a post on Instagram), or a scarf (like my Wake the Dead Scarf), or a blanket (like the 2020 C2C Coffee Blanket). Basically, I’m saying if you’re a creative person (and you are if you’re checking out crochet patterns 😀 ) then your options for what to do with coasters like this are endless!

As always, I used Stitch Fiddle to design this coaster and they’re worked from the bottom up in rows. And below you’re going to find some photos of the coaster as I was working up the design. I included them so you can get a bit more insight into how I like to work designs like this. I primarily used intarsia for this design, meaning I used separate ends of yarn for the color sections and didn’t crochet over/ carry the yarn much. There are more than a few ends to work with but, for me at least, it wasn’t a lot of work to weave them all in.

My plan for these coasters isn’t just household use, I’m going to be turning them into a new bag. I’m going to make 6 of these rectangles, seam them together, and then add them as the back panel and use the Be Brave Poster (coming soon) as the front. Don’t worry, the instructions on how to turn into a bag will be coming soon as well 😀 I can’t wait to finish this design, I sure hope it works out the way I plan.

So… I hope you like this week’s design and are working on your own Pride Month/ Rainbow patterns too. It’s one of my favorite seasons to make things for. And honestly, every year it feels like we need to celebrate Pride more and more loudly (but safely, of course). Please take care of yourself and your community.
Currently all my Pride Month/ Rainbow patterns on Ravelry are on sale for 50% off (through the end of June) and all the proceeds go toward The Trevor Project and Trans Lifeline.

Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by We Crochet and Lion Brand Yarn for other personal projects, just to make something fun and without compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but I’ve used both yarns many times over the years and they’re fantastic. A great worsted weight yarns, I’ll probably keep using them for years to come. This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase yarn through any of the links in this post, I may be compensated. And do not make videos using my patterns.

Intermediate (need to know how to read a graph and do color work)

Materials

  • US G (4.00 mm) crochet hook
  • Worsted weight/ size #4 yarn
  • Notions: scissors, measuring tape, yarn needle

Gauge

  • 18 sc x 21 rows = 4” (blocked)

Terms/ Stitches used

  • St: Stitch
  • Ch: Chain
  • RS: Right side
  • Sc: Single crochet

Notes

  • As is industry standard, this pattern is just a free graph and not written instructions but you can purchase the pattern for a fee in my Ravelry shop.
  • These squares are worked from the bottom up in rows, with a chain and turn at the beginning of the row.
  • Begin with a ch 30 in color A, turn, and start in the 2nd ch from the hook. Each row begins with a “ch 1, turn” and all st counts are 29 sc.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the rows does not count as a stitch.
  • Blocking is suggested for this pattern.
  • The odd rows are the right side.
  • This whole pattern is worked in sc.
  • Your coaster may not be perfectly rectangular when you’re done, but the Border and blocking (which is highly suggested) can help this.
  • To conserve yarn, color A is not carried behind colors B – G, it’s only used where it’s called for. 2 ends of color A were used and then dropped down the WS and picked up when necessary on the next row. If you carry A through the whole square, you may run out of yarn per the estimates and your coaster could be bulky.
  • In the photos: Color A is tan, color B is purple, color C is blue, color D is green, color E is yellow, color F is orange, color G is red, and color H is dark gray. Pound of Love was used for colors A and H and Brava Worsted was used for all others.

Notes on carrying yarn on the Rainbow Heart Coaster crochet pattern

For yarn conservation and clarity purposes, the colors are not carried throughout the coasters. Instead I used “bobbins” or individual stands of color all the sections of color through the design..

Below are 2 close up photos of the coaster, showing all the colors being used separately with separate strands of yarn. If you’d like to carry the yarn (tbh I don’t suggest it for the best results), I do highly suggest while carrying the inactive yarn with the RS facing, make sure it’s behind the previous row’s stitches. And when carrying the inactive yarn with the WS facing, make sure it’s in front of the previous row’s stitches. Don’t pull the carried yarn too tight or let it hang loose (try to keep it even with the stitches), as it can distort your square’s final look. Blocking may help even out some distortion or bulkiness of the center that may occur.

For this technique, I prefer to use individual strands for all the colors, even the main color. I change colors on the final pull through of the sc and drop the inactive yarn down the WS and pick it back up as I work the rows back and forth. It can be a bit challenging to do this with so many colors but this is a nice small project and a good opportunity to practice 😀 It was a lot when I worked on the first coaster but by the 5th it wasn’t so bad.

Remember: Your coasters may not be perfectly rectangular when you’re done, but the border and blocking (which is highly suggested) can help this. The seaming can also even out some size inconsistency.

Graph for the Rainbow Heart Coaster crochet pattern by Divine Debris

For the squares: begin with a ch 30 in color A, turn, and start in the 2nd ch from the hook. Each row begins with a “ch 1, turn” and all st counts are 29 sc.

Border
With the RS facing you, join color H in the first st on the other side of Row 1 of the coaster.
Row 1: H: Ch 1, sc into the next 29 sts, ch 1 at the corner and rotate a quarter turn, sc into the next 24 row ends, ch 1 at the corner and rotate a quarter turn, sc into the next 29 sts of Row 24, ch 1 at the corner and rotate a quarter turn, sc down the next 24 row ends, ch 1 at the corner, join with a slip st – 106 sc, 4 ch-1 spaces
Fasten off, weave in your ends. Block the coaster so it measures 4.9” x 6.8”.
