Free Cute Strawberry Bag Crochet Pattern – A Berry Design

Learn to make this fun and berry inspired by, the Cute Strawberry Bag, from free graphs and assembly instructions by Divine Debris.

It’s March already, can you believe it? Here in Utah we’ve gone through a few false Springs and it’s a bummer, because I’m ready for warmer weather and brighter colors. Luckily, as a crocheter, I can start Spring any time I want and I decided to kick it off with this week’s new design – the Cute Strawberry Bag crochet pattern.

I’ve been teasing this design on social media since the end of last month and I’m so glad I can finally release it. And the story of how it came about it kind of boring, to be honest. I was watching Angel (the tv show) and trying to brainstorm a new design. At first I wanted a cross body bag with a strawberry square, so I designed the square but I had to frog that design and the next 4 designs. Then I finally got the right shape for the berry, the right background color (I almost went with a solid cream), and realized a cross body 4 square design wasn’t enough, I needed to make this strawberry bag bigger.

Now this bag isn’t as big as my previous bags, because it’s only 10 squares. The squares, however, are still worked from the bottom up in rows of single crochet stitches (I used intarsia/ bobbins for these squares). And When you’re done with your 10 squares you seam them up in to a sort-of hour glass shape and then you fold that in half and seam up the sides to make your new bag. A set of straps are added, worked in the round directly onto the bag, to finish your design. It’s truly so easy. I am amazed by it every time.

[Image description] Top down look of many Cute Strawberry Squares on a wood grain background as a white woman's hand adds "seeds" with a bottle of white puffy paint.

To finish off these strawberry squares I added some bits of puffy paint for the seeds. Feel free to add your finishing touches as you’d like (I had people say they would use yarn or seed beads which I think would look fantastic. Just make sure the contrast is good, so the colors really pop. And as always, always suggest steam blocking both the squares and the seams (after they’re done) because it’s magical. I even have a Reel on Instagram showing why I like to steam block.

Anyway, I hope you like this week’s new pattern. I had so much fun designing it, frogging it, and making another square to decide if it looked “strawberry” enough. I think it got there 😀 Thank you so much for your support. And remember you can purchase an ad-free pdf of of this pattern on Ravelry if you’d like written instructions.

Please note: I was provided Brava Worsted and Brava Speckle yarns for this pattern by We Crochet for the purposes of designing the Cute Strawberry Bag crochet pattern, without compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but been using Brava Worsted, it’s one of my favorite worsted with yarns because it’s soft an colorful. Notes on yarn on the Cute Strawberry Bag crochet pattern

For yarn conservation and clarity purposes, the colors are not carried throughout the pattern. Instead I used “bobbins” or individual stands of color for the pattern. This method is called intarsia if you’d like to look it up for further assistance.

Below are 2 close up photos of the Cute Strawberry Square showing all the colors being used separately. If you’d like to carry the yarn, I do suggest while carrying the inactive yarn with the RS facing, make sure it’s behind the previous row’s stitches. And when carrying the inactive yarn with the WS facing, make sure it’s in front of the previous row’s stitches.
Don’t pull the carried yarn too tight or let it hang loose (try to keep it even
with the stitches), as it can distort your square’s final look. Blocking may help even
out some distortion or bulkiness of the center that may occur.

Cute Strawberry Bag Square

Make 10

Key: color A is white, color B is red, and color C is green.

Graph for the Cute Strawberry Square by Divine Debris

For the squares: begin with a ch 25 in color A, turn, and start in the 2nd ch from the hook. Each row begins with a “ch 1, turn” and all st counts are 24 sc.

Border
With the RS facing you, join color D in the first st on the other side of Row 1 of the square.
Row 1: D: Ch 1, sc into the next 24 sts, ch 1 at the corner, sc into the next 24 row ends, ch 1 at the corner, sc into the next 24 sts of Row 24, ch 1 at the corner, sc down the next 24 row ends, ch 1 at the corner, join with a slip st – 96 sc, 4 ch-1 spaces
Fasten off, weave in your ends. Block the square so it measures 5.2” x 5.2”.

Assembly

  • You should have a total of 10 squares.
  • You can use any method of seaming for this section. I used a back loop only slip st.
  • Fasten off between each seam and weave in your ends securely.
  • Be sure to also seam the ch1 at the corners of each square.

To better visualize how you need to assemble your bag, lay your squares in rows of: 2, 3, 2, 1, 2, with the last row of squares upside down. You want them to be upside down because when you seam the bag along the middle single square, they’ll all be facing up the same way. See the photo below for reference.

[Image description] Cute Strawberry Bag assembly photo 1 - all 10 squares are seamed and are laying on an fake wood background.

When your Bag is seamed to match the photo above flip it over so that the wrong side is facing you.
Follow Steps 1 – 3 on how to finish seaming the sides of your bag.

[Image description] Cute Strawberry Bag assembly photo 2 - all 10 squares are seamed and are laying on an fake wood background, color coded for where to seam next.

Step 1: Fold your bag along the dark blue line in the center so it looks like the photo below.

[Image description] Cute Strawberry Bag assembly photo 3 - the 10 squares have been folded in half for further seaming.

Step 2: Seam the green edges to the teal edges on the right-hand side of the bag. The photo below shows how it will line up.

Step 3: Seam the pink edges to the yellow edges on the left-hand side of the bag. The photo below shows how it will line up.

When your bag is seamed, it should look like the photo below.
Weave in all your ends. You can block the bag or the seams at this time if you’d like.
Move onto the Straps.

Cute Strawberry Bag Straps

In the left photo above, the blue arrow shows which side you need to start your straps on and in the right photo, the green arrow shows you where you start your first st (not the ch 1 at the corner).

[Image description] Cute Strawberry Bag Straps photo 3 - photo showing where to skip a space for the straps

The photo above shows you (in purple) how you go up the square from where you joined your yarn, skip across a space (this is where the strap is) and work down another square. You will repeat this on the other side of the bag to create 2 straps.

Rnd 1: With color D, pull up a loop in the indicated by the green arrow in the photo
above (the first st, not the ch 1, to the left of the seam you made when you did Step 2 of
the Assembly), sc into the next 24 sts of the square you’re on, ch 60, skip the ch 1
and next 24 sts on this square, skip where the 3 squares are joined and move to the next
square to the left, skip the next 24 sts and ch 1 on the corner and sc into the next 24
sts of this square, moving to the other side of the bag, skip the ch 1 at the corner and
where the 3 squares are joined and move to the next square to the left, skip ch 1 at the
corner and sc into the next 24 sts of this square, ch 60, skip the ch 1 and next 24 sts
on this square, skip where the 3 squares are joined and move to the next square to the
left, skip the next 24 sts and ch 1 on the corner and sc into the next 24 sts of this
square, skip the ch 1 at the corner and where the 3 squares are joined, join with a slip st
– 96 sc, 2 ch 60 spaces
Rnds 2 – 4: D: Ch 1, turn, sc around, join – 216 sc
Fasten off, weave in your ends. Block this section if you’d like.
