Happy March friends! I can’t believe it’s already the first post of this month. It feels like the year is going so fast (but also taking forever, ya know?). And I don’t know about you, I feel like this week’s pattern release really gets to the heart of what I feel – bright, warm, and (maybe) angry flames with the Cute Fire Square crochet pattern.

I was doing like we all do probably do, being deep in my feelings while watching the news. It’s hard not to take my feels into crochet and that’s how I ended up making a fire coaster design. While these work great for a coaster/ square design they also make great components of larger projects. You can make them into bags (like the Field of Flowers Bag or Cat Lady Bag) or a wall hanging (like I did with my Galactic Glow Trio, that’s a post on Instagram), or a scarf (like my Wake the Dead Scarf), or a blanket (like the 2020 C2C Coffee Blanket). Basically, it depends on how much fire you feel like making.

As always, I used Stitch Fiddle to design this square and the samples are all worked from the bottom up in rows. And below you’re going to find some photos of the Cute Potions Coaster as I was working up that design. I didn’t take tons of wip photos of this square but the techniques are the same. I like to include photos like these so you can get a bit more insight into how I like to work designs like this. I primarily used intarsia for this design, meaning I used separate ends of yarn for the color sections and didn’t crochet over/ carry the yarn much. There are more than a few ends to work with but, for me at least, it wasn’t a lot of work to weave them all in.

Personally, I have already decided to seam these flames into one long wall hanging. I just need to get myself a stick and sew the squares end to end. It won’t take too long. I think I’ll even add a little fringe to one end. I don’t know what it is, but I think wall hangings look great with fringe.

So… I hope you like this week’s design. I used to draw flames on all my notebooks when I was a teen, it was my favorite way draw silly little designs. I love that now I have the opportunity to make it in yarn too 😀 And if you’d like to pick them up, the instructions for this pattern are available in my Ravelry shop.

Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by We Crochet and Lion Brand Yarn for other personal projects, just to make something fun and without compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but I’ve used both yarns many times over the years and they’re fantastic. A great worsted weight yarns, I’ll probably keep using them for years to come. This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase yarn through any of the links in this post, I may be compensated. • These squares are worked from the bottom up in rows, with a chain and turn at the beginning of the row.
  • Begin with a ch 22 in color A, turn, and start in the 2nd ch from the hook. Each row begins with a “ch 1, turn” and all st counts are 21 sc.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the rows does not count as a stitch.
  • Blocking is suggested for this pattern.
  • The odd rows are the right side.
  • This whole pattern is worked in sc.
  • Your coaster may not be completely even but border and blocking can help.
  • None of the colors are carried across, instead bobbins/ different pieces of yarn are used and dropped down the WS when not needed. The squares are not perfectly square but blocking and the border can help.
  • For the main square: Color A is red, color B is orange, color C is yellow, and color D is white. Color E is black (Border) for all squares). DIYarn by Lion Brand Yarn was used.

Notes on carrying yarn on the Cute Fire Squares crochet pattern

For yarn conservation and clarity purposes, the colors are not carried throughout the squares. Instead I used “bobbins” or individual stands of color all the sections of color through the design. I didn’t take wip photos of this pattern, so I have photos of the Cute Potions Coaster to better help you visualize how to make this square.

Below are 2 close up photos of the Cute Potions Coaster, showing all the colors being used separately with separate strands of yarn. If you’d like to carry the yarn (tbh I don’t suggest it for the best results), I do highly suggest while carrying the inactive yarn with the RS facing, make sure it’s behind the previous row’s stitches. And when carrying the inactive yarn with the WS facing, make sure it’s in front of the previous row’s stitches. Don’t pull the carried yarn too tight or let it hang loose (try to keep it even with the stitches), as it can distort your square’s final look. Blocking may help even out some distortion or bulkiness of the center that may occur.

For this technique, I prefer to use individual strands for all the colors, even the main color. I change colors on the final pull through of the sc and drop the inactive yarn down the WS and pick it back up as I work the rows back and forth. It can be a bit challenging to do this with so many colors but this is a nice small project and a good opportunity to practice 😀 It was a lot when I worked on the first coaster but by the 5th it wasn’t so bad.

Remember: Your coasters may not be perfectly even when you’re done, but the border and blocking (which is highly suggested) can help this.
