Hi there friends! I know it’s only February but I feel like it’s been a big year for animals. In January I released the Cute Paw Print Square and it was really well received and led wonderfully into my Cat Lady Bag from the beginning of the month. Which of course brings me to this week’s new pattern release, the Cute Cats Squares crochet patterns.
When I designed the Cat Lady Bag I originally had like 6 squares. I was really inspired and in the zone making cats but knew for the bag itself I was only going to use 3 squares. Any more than that might overwhelm people. But I didn’t know what to do with the squares, because I still loved them. Naturally I took to social media to ask and the people in unison responded – release them! So here we are. More cats.
These squares are actually the same st count as the ones I used for the Cat Lady Bag, but due to the size difference in yarn from Vanna’s Choice to Basic Stitch, they come out a bit smaller. But if you use the same yarn, you can definitely work these into your very own Cat Lady Bag.
Like my other bags and squares, the individual squares here I work color A behind color B but I don’t take color B to the edges of the square. This does make a slight thicker space behind B but steam blocking your squares can help to fix that and make your squares all the same size and softness. I always suggest steam blocking, it’s magical. I even have a Reel on Instagram showing why I like to steam block.
I really hope you like this week’s new cat family addition. I am a huge fan of cats, because I kinda relate to their cold but loving vibe. 😀 And there’s no greater compliment than when the “cat that doesn’t like anyone” likes you. Not to brag but I’ve had that happen to me, a lot. Anyway… have fun crocheting!
Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by Lion Brand Yarn for the purposes of designing a different pattern but used it for the Cute Cats Squares crochet pattern too, without compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but been using Basic Stitch for so long, it’s one of my favorite worsted with yarns. Notes on carrying yarn on the Cute Cats Squares crochet patterns
For yarn conservation and clarity purposes, color B is not carried through the entire square. Instead, color B is only used where it’s called for in the chart/ instructions and color A is carried behind it when not in use. Color B is only carried behind color A in the center of the square, between the tails and cat, although you could use separate strands of B there to eliminate the need to carry the yarn.
Below are 2 close up photos of the Cat Square 3 of the Cat Lady Bag but the technique used is the same, showing color B carried and dropped when not in use. When carrying the inactive yarn with the RS facing, make sure it’s behind the previous row’s stitches. And when carrying the inactive yarn with the WS facing, make sure it’s in front of the previous row’s stitches.
Don’t pull the carried yarn too tight or let it hang loose (try to keep it even with the stitches), as it can distort your square’s final look. Blocking may help even out some distortion or bulkiness of the center that may occur.
