Free Claire Square Baskets Crochet Pattern

Learn to make the fun 2-color basket duo - the Claire Square Baskets from 2 free patterns on Divine Debris.

Happy last day of July my friends. While I’ve been celebrating Summerween I’ve also been hard at work on some not so “Halloween any time of year” projects. And if you’ve been a fan for a while, you will know that I love baskets because they’re useful, you can put your next wip in one (this a very important point tbh), and they make great gifts. And for those reasons (and probably more, I need to check) this July’s final post is for the free Claire Square Baskets crochet pattern.

The name probably already gives it away, but this is a different take on 2023’s Claire Basket pattern. That one was a surprise hit and I’ve wanted to make another version of it for a while, but you know how it is, time just gets ahead of you. But luckily I had some time the last couple of months and decided I was finally ready to make a square duo version of the Claire Basket.

These two individual baskets are actually not super difficult to make – they’re worked from the bottom up in 3 sections – the base (worked back and forth in rows), then you move on to the sides, which are worked in the round (not continuous rounds but rounds with a “slip st, ch 1, turn”), and finally you move onto the handles that are also worked into the round. The two baskets are different in sizes (of course) and they make fun little nesting baskets. I actually wanted to make a smaller small one but changed my mind, felt like that would be weird but if you want to, making a 15 x 15 base and following the instructions for the small (adjusting the stitch count of course) and then maybe skip only 8 sts and ch 12 for the handles. Just small adjustments can make a cute little desk basket 😀

Personally, I love using bulky yarns for baskets and for this one I used one of my favorite bulky yarns, Hue + Me by Lion Brand Yarn. It’s holds up well and makes a really great basket. If you want to adjust your yarn, feel free. Just make sure you use the smallest hooks you’re comfortable with, it keeps the sides tighter. I used H/ 5.00 mm and hook for this because of the texture and stitch requirements but the yarn label itself says to use a larger hook – but the smaller hook is how to keep the sides sturdy. That’s honestly the only trick I have to keeping the basket standing, tight stitches (although they do flop about some).

Thank you so much for reading to this point (if you have) in my rambling about how to adjust this pattern and the yarn I used. And I appreciate you checking out this pattern on my blog, I love bringing patterns to you all and I hope to continue in the future. If you’d like to pick up the pdf for this pattern, it’s available in my Ravelry shop here.

Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by Lion Brand Yarn for the purposes of designing a kit and used it for the Claire Square Baskets crochet pattern, with compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but I love using Hue + Me for baskets, it works up so well and it’s super sturdy and the colors are fantastic! And I was commissioned to make this pattern and you can buy a kit for this pattern on Lion Brand’s website. This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase yarn through any of the links in this post, I may be compensated. And do not make videos using my patterns.

  • The gauge is not super critical for this pattern, but to keep your sides standing use a hook that will get you the closest to the gauge as possible.
  • Both sizes of this pattern are worked from the bottom up in 3 sections: the Base, the Sides, and the Handles.
  • The Base sections are worked back and forth in rows and the Sides and Handles are worked in the round with a slip st into the first st to join.
  • Don’t make your slip sts (not the join, the ones within the rnds) too tight or it may make it difficult to work back into.
  • The ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • The sample for this pattern uses Hue + Me from Lion Brand Yarn: in two colors A: Aubergine and B: Salt Check out the kit from Lion Brand Yarn here.
