I love witches (I think I’ve said that before on this blog). I just really do. They might be my favorite supernatural creature, because they’re so often depicted as badass ladies. In a lot of lore, witches were scary to people (especially men) because they were often women who just didn’t care (or were old/ past the age of fecundity, lived on the fringes of society, were the healers before men became the only doctores, etc..). I actually took an entire class in college about the witch panic and trials that resulted from it in early modern Europe and it was so very interesting. If you’re like me and can’t get enough witchy things, check out the Fake Geek Girls episode about Witches (it’s one of my favorites).
Anyway, enough about me, this week’s design is another Halloween one because, why not! I had a lot of fun coming up with this idea. I wanted to make another wall hanging in my Be Series and I wanted to make it Halloween themed but from there I was out of answers. I went through some ideas “Be Spooky,” (which I eliminated because it was a bit boring and the word spook has entirely too many fraught meanings) “Be Scary” (this one was a favorite but my justification would have been too close to being brave). I settled on Be Witchy because it is all things I want to be, scary, powerful, mysterious, and badass. Also, I still would love to look like Nicole Kidman did in that green dress in Practical Magic.
I hope you love this pattern as much as I do. It’s a little complicated and may result in you tangling up your yarn (it happened to me) but as long as you take your time you can get through it. This design would also make a fantastic bag, for trick or treating perhaps, if you create 2 sides and seam it up, then add a strap like my Drink Coffee Bag or Crayons Are Cute Bag.

Where to buy the Be Witchy Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern
Materials
- US H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
- Aran/ medium/ size #4 weight yarn
- 4 oz. / 203 yards
- At least 5 colors
- I used Caron One Pound
- Yarn needle
- Wooden dowel/ stick
- Puffy Paint (optional)
Gauge
Terms/stitches used
- RS: right side
- Ch: chain
- St: stitch
- Slip st: slip stitch
- Sc: single crochet
Notes
- This pattern is worked in 2 sections: the Main Body and the Top. The Main body is worked first, from the top down to the point, then the top is added when you flip the whole piece over and work along the other side of the original chain row.
- The ch 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.
- The tapestry section is labeled and has special instructions. The directions for this portion will only tell you what color (ie: Color A, Color B, etc…) and the number in the parentheses tells you how many sc to make.
- The use of bobbins like they did on Hodgepodge Crochet is suggested for this pattern.
- You will need to know how to create a slipknot on your hook for this pattern.
- In the example, the inactive yarn is carried behind the active. If this is confusing, you might want to check out the helpful Moogly video on tapestry.
- Color A is off white (Caron One Pound in Off White), color B is black (Caron One Pound in Black), color C is brown (Caron One Pound in Espresso), color D is purple (random stash color), color E is green (random stash color).

-Top-
Flip your whole piece around so that you’re working along the other edge of the original chain row.
Row 1: Create a slipknot on your hook and with the RS facing you, sc around your dowel/ stick and into the Main Body piece 56 times
Row 2: Ch 80 (you can do more or less here depending on how you want it to hang), skip the next 65 sts, slip st into the last st – 1 ch-80 space
Optional
Draw some little stars and moons on your witch hat to give it a little extra magic feel. I also added eyes to the cats because they’re a bit hard to read when they’re without eyes.
So, there is this week’s new design. I really hope you like it and take a moment to share a link with at least 1 friend. 😀
See ya next week!

I've purchased the pattern hoping for a chart so I don't have to read it all as that's confusing for me. Any chance I can get a chart? Otherwise I wouldn't have purchased it

Hi. I am a completely blind crocheter, and I was wondering just exactly what it's a picture of? I mean, of course it's a witch, but how is she depicted? Is she in any stance? On a broom? And you said you had cats here as well, is the brown that represents the cats? Also, could you give a rundown of what colors represent what? I know that black represents clothes, white represents the boarder, and green is skin, but what are brown and purple there for?

Hi! This design is of a square and in the center the phrase "Be Witchy" is in brown, with a black conical witch hat that has a purple band is to the right of the words. Along the bottom of the wall-hanging are repeated black cats and cauldrons, where there are green bubbles on the cauldron. I hope that helps.

Hi! This may be a dumb question, but I am new to crocheting tapestries. I am left-handed, so do I need to read the pattern from right to left for it to turn out correctly? Or can I just crochet as the written directions indicate?

If you crochet it as written the side facing you will be the "wrong" side. If you work the rows backward it will work out. :) I'd say either way you work it, just make sure that you carry the yarn on the "wrong side" so it makes the "right side" easier to read.
Hope that helps!
Take care, Amber

Hi! Can you please elaborate on what you're having an issue with? What row seems to be off?
