Cute Cups Mug Rug Free Crochet Pattern – Love it!

Cute Cups Mug Rug free crochet pattern by DivineDebris.com

Won’t you look at that, it’s August already! Not that I’m complaining, I am ready for Fall and to me, August is often the beginning of the Fall season. At some point this month the weather will turn colder, it will be perfect time for hot cups of something delicious. Which brings me to this month’s first pattern, the Cute Cups Mug Rug!

I love a good mug rug or coaster! If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you probably know that already. This month’s pattern is kind of a sibling to the Cute Cactus Mug Rug (link to the design on Ravelry) design I created for Stitch Together’s July CAL. I loved how easy the pattern was to make and cute it turned out, I knew immediately I needed to add a coffee version – you know I like coffee after all (C2C squares, tapestry squares, a bag).

And I hope you’re not intimidated by the tapestry crochet in this design. I promise you it’s very simple, if you can do a single crochet you can definitely work this pattern. Just change colors in your last pull through and make sure to carry the yarn behind the stitch. One of these days I will make a tutorial myself but until then, check out Moogly’s post on it – it’s where I learned about tapestry. 😀

Oh, and I did want to note that in the blue coaster I used a reverse single crochet (also called a crab stitch) to create a nice border. I didn’t want to make fringe on the second one but the edges just didn’t look clean, so here’s another idea you can use to customize your mug rug.

I hope you like this design friends and give it a try. Be safe and well, wear your masks and be kind. See ya next week!

Level

Intermediate (must know tapestry crochet)

Materials

  • US G (4.00 mm) crochet hook
  • Worsted/ medium/ size #4 weight yarn
    • .5 – 1 oz. / 20 – 40 yards
    • At least 3 colors
  • Notions: scissors, measuring tape, yarn needle

Gauge

  • 18 rows x 18 scs = 4”

Terms/ Stitches used

  • RS: right side
  • Ch: chain
  • St: stitch
  • Sc: single crochet

Notes

  • This pattern is worked from the bottom up, flat, in back and forth rows, with a turn at the beginning/ end of the row.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.
  • Every stitch in this pattern is a single crochet. The directions will only tell you what color (ie: Color A, Color B, etc…) and the number in the parentheses tells you how many scs to make.
  • Your mug rug may need some light blocking.
  • In the example, the inactive yarn is carried behind the active. If this is confusing, you might want to check out the helpful Moogly video on tapestry.
  • Color A is cream, color B is pink, and color C is brown.

Finished product dimensions (measurements may vary by gauge and yarn used)

5.25” x 4” (not counting the fringe)
