Who needs more witchy squares? Well, you’re in luck because there are now 3 additional squares for you to use in making your fun and unique bags for Halloween. And these go perfect with last week’s Patchwork Witch Bag – introducing the Cute Witch Squares crochet patterns.

Longtime fans know I love coasters. They’re so wonderful and fun to make (for me at least) and a great way to use smaller bits of yarn that’s left over from other projects. And when I make a 13 square bag I often have so, so many ideas that not all of them can make it into the final project – which is why you get some b-sides after the release. These Cute Witch Squares are the left over designs from the Patchwork Witch Bag and can be mixed in with the design if you’d like (as can the Patchwork Halloween Bag squares, they’re all the same size).

As always, I used Stitch Fiddle to design this coaster and they’re worked from the bottom up in rows. And below you’re going to find some photos of the Spell Book Square from the Patchwork Witch Bag as I was working up the design. I included them so you can get a bit more insight into how I like to work designs like this. I primarily used intarsia for this design, meaning I used separate ends of yarn for the color sections all throughout the design. I love a clear design, ya know?

I made these squares after the Patchwork Witch Bag and so now I’m not sure what I’m going to do with them. Maybe I’ll seam all my extra squares together for a very fun quilt design. Who knows. Anyway, I do hope you like these squares, they’re super cute and I love how playful yet Halloweeny they are. And I hope you do too 😀

Notes on carrying yarn on the Cute Witch Squares crochet patterns

For yarn conservation and clarity purposes, none of the colors used in the squares were carried/ crocheted over. Instead I used “bobbins” or individual stands of color for the other color or colors for all the squares.

Below are 2 close up photos of the Spell Book Square from the Patchwork Witch Bag showing the 4 colors of the square being used at the same time. Each color is attached to a separate skein of yarn and used only where the colors are called for as you work across the square, dropping the yarn when not in use down the WS. Just drop the color and pick it back up as you work back and forth across the squares (just change colors on the final pull through of the sc).

For this technique, I prefer to use individual strands for all the colors, even the main color. I change colors on the final pull through of the sc and drop the inactive yarn down the WS and pick it back up as I work the rows back and forth. It can be a bit challenging to do this with so many colors but this is a nice small project and a good opportunity to practice 😀

Remember: Your squares may not be perfectly even when you’re done, but the border and blocking (which is highly suggested) can help this.

For the squares: begin with a ch 20 in color A, turn, and start in the 2nd ch from the hook. Each row begins with a “ch 1, turn” and all st counts are19 sc.

With the RS facing you, join color C in the first st on the other side of Row 1 of the coaster.
