The Free Alexis Shawl Crochet Pattern- It’s the Triangle Style

Ah July, where are you going? I have so many ideas and plans for patterns going forward and with the days going by so fast, it’s hard for me to get everything done. Ha! But it’s ok, ya know? Because that means Halloween patterns are gonna need to be made soon. 😀 But wait! Before we get there I want to share with you this week’s new pattern – the Alexis Shawl crochet pattern.
Want to know something funny? It looks like July is the time for Alix Shawls because this time last year, I released the original of these designs (check it out here). Now, you might be asking “Alix? I thought this was the Alexis Shawl” and you’re right but this design is a variation on that Alix Shawl, giving you that same wonderfully squishy texture that you see in my Alix Line. But for this pattern I wanted to adapt the texture a bit with some more open sections and a more traditional triangle shape and so to keep the designs different and clear in my head I changed the name. Ooohh, I hope that clears that up. Ha!

Like all the patterns in the Alix Line, this is a very simple texture made from half double crochets. The half double crochet is my all time, 100% favorite stitch and I just love it. And in this design you get to play around with the back third loop variation (explained below) that makes such wonderfully squishy texture. It’s so easy to do but adds so much to the design. I like to keep designs pretty simple (which you may already know) and find ways to update the hdc to make it feel new. I hopefully I can succeed in that 🙂
Even better than the easy hdc texture is the how easy this pattern is to customize. Feel free to add more rows, just keep the increase even with the 6 added sts per row, or for-go the picots on the final row and add some fringe. Or stripes! I had a lovely time working with this yarn by Hobbii but it’s all self striping, so I had no hand in making these lovely color choices but I think they worked out quite nicely, don’t you?
Honestly, I cannot wait to see how you all make this design your own. And don’t forget, you can adjust the yarn you use as you’d like, just keep your tension even. 😀 And don’t forget to wash your masks and be kind to yourself and others.

• Size #2 Fine/ Sport Yarn
  • 7.4 oz/ 880 yds 
  • Sultan by Hobbii in the colorway Carnelian (1 skein)

• 14 rows x 20 hdc = 4″ (blocked)

• Sk: Skip

• BTLO: Back third loop only (explained below)

Notes

• BTLO: (Back third loop only): When looking at the stitch you will have the 2 loops on top of the hdc (the V on top), lean the stitch towards you and will see the third loop that runs along the back of the stitch. This is the loop you will work into. This stitch is also known as the Camel Stitch. Please note that when you work this stitch you will be looking at the back of the previous row’s hdc, so the third loop will be facing you. 
• Picot: Ch 3, insert your hook into the 3rd ch from the hook, yarn over, draw through the ch and the loop on your hook.
• This pattern is worked from the center out, with increases each row.
• Each row’s stitch count increases by 6 sts each row (this means hdcs and ch-1s, it does not count ch-2s), ie: Row 2: 8 hdc, Row 3: 14 hdc, Row 4: 20 hdc.
• The ch-1 at the beginning of the rows does not count as a stitch, just make it approximately the same height as a hdc.
• Blocking is suggested for this pattern.
• Feel free to use stitch markers to keep track of where to add stitches in the center and on the ends of the rows.
• The sample was made in Sultan by Hobbii in the colorway Carnelian (1 skein).
