Mary Market Tote Bag free crochet pattern by DivineDebris.com

Hi everyone!
Who needs another cup of coffee this Tuesday? I know I do!
Man, it was a long weekend at my house. I had to work my retail job over-night on Saturday and Sunday and if you’ve ever worked nights, you know that it makes the shifts go on forever (the fact that we stayed for hours after we should have left didn’t help). So, I’m dragging my feet today and in desperate need of more coffee.

Luckily, I like crochet better than I do moving around boxes. So updating my blog, editing photos, and releasing 2 new bag patterns this week isn’t as much of a headache. I mean, I’d much rather be crocheting but you gotta do the admin stuff sometimes, ya know?

Anyway… let’s talk about this fun new bag, shall we? This bag is the Mary Market Tote and I quite love it. I made this design as a sister piece to the Mary Vest pattern because it uses the same V-stitch but this bag has more color work going to make it extra fun. I just loved how the V-stitch worked in the vest that I knew I couldn’t wait to use it again… but make it a bit different.

One of the things I like about market bags it that you can kinda use any sturdy yarn and get an awesome design from it. I made this in a size #3 acrylic yarn but you could make it with cotton size #4 or #2 and still have a fun bag, it just might be a little different sized (which is where experimenting with the gauge and hooks comes in). I also included the multiple in the notes section if you find yourself wanting to make larger or smaller bags – just a simple multiple of 2, very easy to customize.
I really hope you like this new design! And if you’re like me and loving market bags right now, I do have the new Iris Market Tote out if you’d like to check out that design too.

I hope you like this pattern!

See ya next week <3 <3

Materials

Gauge

  • 7 v-stitches x 8 rows = 4” (steamed and blocked)
    Ravelry link

Terms/ Stitches used

  • Magic circle
  • RS: right side
  • Ch: chain
  • St: stitch
  • Sc: single crochet
  • Sc2tog: single crochet 2 sts together
  • Dc: double crochet
  • VS: V stitch (explained below)

Notes

  • VS: *dc twice* worked into the same stitch. When you work back into this stitch you will work into the space between the 2 dcs from the previous row.
  • This pattern is worked in 3 sections: the Base, the Sides, and the Handles; all in one piece. All sections are worked in the round with a slip st into the first st from the last.
  • The ch-1 at the beginning of some rnds does not count as a stitch.
  • The multiple of this bag is 2 – if you’d like to make it larger or smaller you just keep increasing/decreasing the base so that it has an even number. You will have to adjust the handles if you change the size of the bag.
  • In the photos color A is dark purple (Stitch Studio by Nicole in Storybook Lullaby in Mulberry) and color B is lighter purple (
Stitch Studio by Nicole in Storybook Lullaby in Blush).
