I Carried A Watermelon: the Free Watermelon Pillow crochet pattern

Happy May everyone! How scary is it that it’s already May? Well, I’m scared. Hubs and I are moving next month and it just feels like all our time here in NC is just flying past us. Moving across the country again? Yeah, that’s scary. But I’m doing well, preparing where I can and getting a ton of crochet planned 😀
So… now that it’s May, who’s ready for watermelon? Ha! I shared a photo of this pattern on IG and I was just overjoyed at the response, you all are so amazing! I know I love some watermelon in the Summer and it’s been warm the last couple of days so I’m assuming the Summer is right around the corner. I hope for this design that you’re able to make whatever you want. Make a two sided watermelon or do the rind twice with different colors and get a super trippy pattern – you decide. I love to make patterns that enable you to get as creative as you’d like with the finished product. I just can’t wait to see what you make!

If you appreciate my weekly patterns I hope you’d consider purchasing an ad-free pdf of this pattern in my Ravelry shop.

Notes

  • This pattern is worked in 2 pieces, the front and the back, and you close the two pieces together with a single crochet border.
  • This pattern is worked in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker to help you (if you need it) so you can keep track of the rows. The “Rounds” are worked in continuously and the “Rows” you slip st into the first st of the row.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the some rows does not count as a stitch.
  • All of the stitches in this pattern are single crochets. The directions will only tell you what color (ie: Color A, Color B, etc…) and the number in the parentheses tells you how many single crochets to make.
  • The instructions that read (2x + a number + 2x, etc…) mean that you sc twice into the sts that read 2x and sc once in the number of sts indicated. Ex: A: (2x + 7 + 2x) means with color A sc twice into the next st, sc once into the next 7 sts, sc twice into the next.
  • For the rind size, the inactive yarn is carried behind the active. If this is confusing, you might want to check out this helpful Moogly video on tapestry. For the flesh side, the flesh side is worked using bobbins for the black seeds (the instructions won’t tell you when to fasten off the color B).
  • In the photos: color A is pink (Bernat Super Value in Peony Pink), color B is black (Bernat Super Value in Black), color C is white (Caron One Pound in White), color D is lime green (Bernat Super Value in Lush), and color E is darker green (Bernat Super Value in Grass).

Fasten off, weave in your ends.

– Closing/ Border –

Once you’ve got both of your sides completed, place them one on top of the other. While there isn’t a “right side” to this project make sure to place the less pretty sides of your watermelon so that they’re touching (this will be the inside of your ami). Create a slipknot on your hook with color D and begin anywhere by scing into both pieces and continue all the way around. (like you did on the Acorn Ami), pausing 3/4 of the way to fill your pillow with stuffing.
Fasten off, weave in all your ends.

Tada! There’s the new pillow I really hope you like!
See ya next week <3
