Janice (sort of) Rainbow Headband
Hello! How’s your Tuesday been going? I’m SO tired, like falling asleep at the keyboard tired. Luckily I had this pattern all ready for everyone! It’s a great Spring/ Summer design you can make in one evening, using as few or as many colors as you would like. I went with a rainbow color scheme, because it’s happy and I want to wear it to Pride later this Summer.
I named this after the Janice Cowl, which is different but you still use the same fan stitch combo. If you all like this design, perhaps I’ll make a bracelet one! 😀
You can get an ad-free downloadable pdf of this pattern in my Ravelry shop.
Materials:
- 2.25 mm crochet hook
- Size 10 crochet thread
- I used Aunt Lydia’s Crochet thread
- Needle that will weave in your ends
- Hair tie/ elastic
Gauge:
- 1″ x 1″ = 10 scs x 10 rows
Terms/stitches used:
- Ch: Chain
- St: Stitch
- Sc: Single crochet
- Dc: Double crochet
Notes:
- This pattern is worked back and forth in rows with a turn at the beginning/ end of the row.
The ch 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch. - At the beginning and end of each row you sc into the hair tie. By the time you complete the headband there will be 2 sections of scs that will be opposite them.
- When changing colors, just pull up the new color at the beginning of the row.
- If you want to make this headband bigger or smaller, I would suggest either removing or adding chs from the ch-20 spaces that happen beside the hair tie. Due to the hair tie, there is some stretch to the headband.
- The shells part is a multiples of 8, so if you want to shorten this pattern you could remove chs in multiples of 8 or to make it bigger, add chs in multiples of 8 – as you add or subtract in multiples of 8, you would add to the repeats of the portion of * to *.
- If you don’t have a hair tie (or want to use it) instead of ch 20s, you can do sections of single crochets that you can use to tie in the back – like 5 scs and ch 15 then work the pattern as written and keep it consistent on both sides.
- You will need to know how to create a slip knot on your hook.
Finished product dimensions:
Width: 8.5″ – 9″ Height: 2″

Love it! & Perfect for Pride.
Very cute and colorful. The hardest part will be finding the thread in stores. Does the Hobby Lobby thread work, I am nit sure of the size at HL but just wondering. What adjustments would you need to make for younger children?
Thank you, and can’t wait to try this.
I looked at number 10 crochet thread and it looked a lot thinner than the thread in the pictures. Am I missing something?
Nope, it’s the same size as I used in this pattern 🙂
