Free Crystal Snowflakes Shawl Crochet Pattern

Learn to make a fun and cozy shawl, which makes a great scarf, with snowflake appliques with the Crystal Snowflakes Shawl free crochet pattern by Divine Debris.

I can’t believe it’s the last day of November. I know when it gets to about this time of year, every year, I just can’t believe how fast the year goes by. I think as I get older it feels like it goes faster tbh. Luckily, I find memories and times get attached to project as I made them throughout the year. It’s one of the reasons I love to make seasonal designs, like this week’s new Crystal Snowflakes Shawl crochet pattern.

I think my favorite part of this design is how it’s cozy shawl but also a nice scarf and boy howdy to I need a nice and voluminous scarf. Now that I’m back in Utah for a really cold winter, I need to be as warm as possible. Ya know? I lost all my weather toughness over the years and so I get too cold. 😀 It’s such a bummer. But luckily I’ve got this new shawl (as a scarf) to keep me warm.

[Image description] A dark photo showing the snowflakes of the Crystal Snowflakes Shawl crochet pattern lit up glow in the dark.

Alright, now onto this week’s new pattern, the Crystal Snowflakes Shawl. This is a very simple but fun design, worked in 1 shawl and 10 snowflakes. The shawl itself is worked in one long piece, on a bit of a bias with increases on one side of the even-numbered rows and decreases on the other (so that the stitch count stays the same but it creates a nice angle to the rows). The odd-numbered rows are just easy texture of single crochet/ double crochet repeats.

I wasn’t sure for this design if I should make the snowflakes separate or not. I know that extra sewing is rather controversial in our industry. It’s extra work, right? But it’s so worth it sometimes. And for me, I wanted a snowflake design but I wanted the snowflakes to stand on their own and not get lost. So individual pieces, it had to be. Especially because I used DIY Glow from Lion Brand for the snowflakes, I wanted them to pop against the blue. 😀

When I started designing the snowflakes I had 5 but had to cut one out, I thought it was a bit too busy. But I think the 4 snowflakes are all different enough that they don’t even need that other one. However, I think if you’d like to add more snowflakes to this pattern I think it would look fabulous. Regardless of how many snowflakes you ultimately decide to make, I encourage you to be sure to block your snowflakes. It will really open up the design and make them even prettier.

Anyway, I hope you like this week’s new pattern. It’s a lot of fun to make, very relaxing once you get into it tbh, and full of customization possibilities. And of course, it’s also so useful for the winter that’s headed our way.

Please note: I was provided the Coboo and DIY Glow yarns for this pattern by Lion Brand Yarn for the purposes of designing this pattern, with compensation. I’ve used both yarns before on a few different patterns and love working with both of them. • RS: Right side
  • Sc: Single crochet
  • Dc: Double crochet
  • Join: Join with a slip st
  • Hdc: Half double crochet
  • Dc2tog: Double crochet 2 sts together

Notes

  • For gauge: Chain an even amount of chs that will give you an over 4” swatch (your row st count needs to be odd), sc into the 2nd ch from the hook, *dc into the next st, sc into the next st,* repeat from * to * across. Row 2: Ch 3, turn, dc across. Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc into the first sc, *dc into the next dc, sc into the next sc,* repeat from * to * across.  Repeat rows 2 – 3 as many times as you need to get more than 4” swatch then measure a blocked section.
  • The body of the shawl is worked in one long piece with a turn at the beginning of each row. On the even-numbered rows there will be an increase at the beginning and a decrease at the end of the row. The odd rows do not feature increases or decreases. The snowflakes are worked separately and sewn to the ends of the shawl.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the odd rows does not count as a stitch.
  • The ch 3 at the beginning of the even rows does count as a stitch. Feel free to replace this with any starting/ standing dc you’d like.
  • Blocking is suggested for this pattern.
  • The even rows are the right side.
  • For the sample: color A is blue (Coboo By Lion Brand Yarn in Steel Blue) and color B is white (DIY Glow by Lion Brand Yarn). Buy the kit here.
