Free Be Brave Poster Crochet Pattern – Great for Pride

Happy June friends! It feels weird to think that 2025 is nearly half over. Time just keeps moving like that, doesn’t it? But at least it’s a wonderful time to sport some rainbows, it is Pride month after all. And this week I’ve got a new pattern for you that is a bit of an update of a classic one – the Be Brave Poster crochet pattern.

Back in 2018 I designed the Be Brave Wall Hanging and honestly, I still love it after all these years and it’s still surprisingly (or unsurprisingly?) pretty popular. Back then I wasn’t thinking too deeply into the design itself, I wanted to make a fun flag looking design that was easy, fun, and had fringe in the body of the pattern. I think it turned out pretty cute and still feel pretty proud of it after all this time. And well, with things as they are, I thought it’d be a good time to update this design.

I call this design a poster but it is still pretty much a wall hanging and like all my other wall hangings, it worked from the bottom up in rows of single crochet stitches. I made the “Be Brave” larger than the previous version and made it a rectangle, adding some rainbow hearts for a little personality. I think this would look great as a bag (which I made it into) or a panel of a shirt, cardigan, or whatever you want to use it for. The important part is to be loud, proud, ans brave.

For making this pattern, I used mostly intarsia and that means I used separate bits of yarn for each of the color sections and only carried color A when necessary. And, as always, I suggest turning your work back and forth not in a circle at the end of the rows to make it a bit easier to keep all the bits of color organized and to keep you from getting too terribly frustrated. Oh! And block the finished design. I swear blocking is one of the best things you can do for color work, it helps to even out all those annoying parts that might not be “perfect.”

Below the graph is available to view, that way if you’d like to make this as sc or hdc or dc you can do it… but you can also make it in C2C if you want to work the graph on a bias. And if you’d prefer you can knit, Tunisian crochet , and even cross stitch this design using the graph as well. It’s entirely up to you 😀 But, keeping with industry standards, if you’d like written instructions to this pattern you can pick those up in my Ravelry shop (it’s written in back and forth rows so it won’t help you with C2C). I know talking about money makes people uncomfortable but I split up these patterns this way so that people do have an incentive to pick up the pdf, it helps me to keep making patterns here on my blog. I hope you understand.

I feel like every year releasing more Pride patterns is important. I use the proceeds from the purchases of the pdfs and ad revenue to donate to The Trevor Project and Trans Lifeline. I also think that we should, when possible, move away from corporate Pride merch and instead make our own, keeping that in the community that supports us instead of the pockets of companies who turn their backs when the politics are no longer “popular.” And this year marks 10 years of marriage equality in the US, as it is the anniversary of Obergefell v Hodges, and just Roe v Wade this isn’t a law set in stone and we need to be aware that we will always, sadly and probably, need to keep fighting. Take care of yourselves, my friends, and of those around you. And don’t forget, Trans rights are human rights.

Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by We Crochet and Lion Brand Yarn for other personal projects, just to make something fun and without compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but I’ve used both yarns many times over the years and they’re fantastic. A great worsted weight yarns, I’ll probably keep using them for years to come. This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase yarn through any of the links in this post, I may be compensated.
