Feel Retro With the Cecelia Tapestry Bag Free Crochet Pattern

Cecelia Tapestry Bag free crochet pattern by DivineDebris.com

Hi there! How’s December treatin’ ya? I ask because I’m treatin’ you to a bonus pattern this month – the Cecelia Tapestry Bag crochet pattern! It’s a design I’ve had in my arsenal for over a year now but never got to posting on my blog. So, in honor of the spirit of the season, here’s a special 5th pattern this month. Don’t worry, next week will be my final Coffee C2C Square.
If you’ve been a fan of my blog for a while, you know I love tapestry crochet designs. I love how you can get really creative and have fun with the technique, making fun eye-catching designs. This design is based on a photo I took of a hotel floor when my husband and I visited Universal Studios back in 2017. The place was all retro themed and I took so many photos to draw inspiration from.
This design did start out as a part of the Furls CAL and I’m so glad to be able to share it with you here. And I can say honestly, I feel like I’m going to be making this as a blanket in the future. Can you imagine? It’ll probably be C2C, so I hope you’re practicing 😀 Because 2021 will be another big year for C2C.

I hope where ever you are you’re having a great time and being safe and healthy. Hugs friends. Wash your hands and masks.

Level

Intermediate (need to know tapestry crochet)

Materials

  • US H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
  • Size #4 worsted weight yarn
    • 2 colors
      • I used Caron One Pound and Caron Cakes
      • Specifics listed below in the Finished Product Dimensions
  • Notions: scissors, measuring tape, yarn needle
  • Stitch markers (optional, good for marking the handles)

Gauge

  • 17 sc x 14 rows BLO = 4” (blocked)

Terms/ Stitches used

  • Rnd: round
  • Ch: chain
  • St: stitch
  • Slip st: slip stitch
  • Sc: single crochet
  • Sc2tog: single crochet 2 stitches together
  • BLO: back loop only

Notes

  • This pattern is worked from the bottom to the top in 3 sections: the Base, the Sides, and the Handles. The base is worked flat in back and forth rows. The Sides and the Handles are worked in the round with a slip st into the first st of the rnd.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the row/rnd does not count as a stitch.
  • Following the ch 1, the first st is worked into the same st as join.
  • Every stitch in the sides portion is a single crochet. The directions will only tell you what color (ie: Color A, Color B, etc…) and the number in the parentheses tells you how many stitches to make.
  • You need to know how to work into the back loop only (BLO) for this pattern. At the end of the rnd, slip st into both loops to help keep your seam straight.
  • In the example, the inactive yarn is carried behind the active. If this is confusing, you might want to check out this helpful Moogly video on tapestry
  • The sample is size medium: color A is white (Caron One Pound in White), and color B is the variegated purple yarn (Caron Big Cakes in Grape Jelly).

Approx finished product dimensions (measurements may vary by gauge and yarn used)

SmallMedium
Diameter: 10.5”
Height: 8.5” -9”  (top of handles, not including the handles extended)
