Free Anti AI Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern

Learn to make the Anti AI Wall Hanging from a free crochet graph by Divine Debris. Great for anyone who doesn't approve of AI taking over creative spaces.

Hi there!
What can I say about this week’s pattern? It pretty much speaks for itself, doesn’t it? Of all the very “political” designs I want to be making right now, this one was the fastest and easiest to work up – the Anti AI Wall Hanging pattern.

I actually mocked up this design back at the end of October I believe. I was just overwhelmed seeing so many AI photos coming through my social media feeds and hearing designers talk about more and more Etsy accounts popping up with AI or stolen patterns (using AI often). It just makes my heart hurt to see. It feels like it’s hard to fight back against. But I decided I wanted to post a pattern and a message to let my followers know where I stand on this – I don’t use AI (for anything, even photo editing) and refuse to support it.

Like nearly all my other wall hanging patterns, the Anti AI Wall Hanging is worked from the bottom up in rows of single crochet stitches. Using Stitch Fiddle I designed this pattern as a tapestry/ intarsia project for people to work up quickly (probably a weekend) and display on a table in a market. While I worked mine, I used a combination of techniques – I used separate skeins of color for the red and black sections (picking them up and dropping them down the WS when not in use) and then crocheted and carried the tan across the row. If you decide use bobbin’s for color work like this, be sure to work back and forth and not in a circle to try to keep the yarn from getting too tangled – here’s a video on Instagram showing what I mean.

Below the graph is available to view, that way if you’d like to make this as sc or hdc or dc you can do it… but you can also make it in C2C if you want to work the graph on a bias. And if you’d prefer you can knit, Tunisian crochet , and even cross stitch this design using the graph as well. It’s entirely up to you 😀

And in keeping with industry standards, if you’d like written instructions to this pattern you can pick those up in my Ravelry shop (it’s written in back and forth rows so it won’t help you with C2C). I know talking about money makes people uncomfortable but I split up these patterns this way so that people do have an incentive to pick up the pdf, it helps me to keep making patterns here on my blog. I hope you understand.

I should have had this pattern ready for market season. I could see this design being hung in a stall among someone’s lovingly made crochet (or knit) goods. TBH I just think more of us should say this AI stuff is garbage and has no place in the arts. Ya know?

Do not make videos from my pattern, you don’t have permission even if this pattern is free.

Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by Lion Brand Yarn for the purposes of designing other patterns but I used the left over to make the Anti AI Wall Hanging pattern, without compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but both yarns are fantastic worsted weight yarns to have in my stash.

  • Begin with a ch 31 in color A, turn, and start in the 2nd ch from the hook. Each row begins with a “ch 1, turn” and all st counts are 30 sc for the graphed portion.
  • The odd rows are the RS.
  • This pattern is worked from the bottom up, row by row with a turn at the beginning of the rows. Finally, after blocking, you sew it to a stick and add any finishing touches you’d like such as surface crochet or fringe.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the rows does not count as a stitch.
  • I worked this design using bobbins/ intarsia the whole way. I didn’t carry the colors B and C across but you can if you’d like, it’s entirely up to you (might be bulky).
  • Blocking is suggested for this pattern.
  • In the photos: color A is tan, color B is red, and color C is black. Stash yarn was used for this pattern – Pound of Love for color A and DIYarn for colors B and C.
