Free No War Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern – Art Is Political

Hi everyone,
As you probably know, I don’t shy away from political statements in my art. And being a human being watching the news right now I feel incredibly motivated to design and release this new pattern – the No War Wall Hanging.

I’m going to be 40 this year and I feel at a loss for words when it comes to talking about how much of my life my country as waged war against other countries. Since my teens under Bush 2.0 I have been anti war. I know people whose lives were cut short or irreversibly changed by war. I don’t think it should be controversial to say, the US has no right to go in and destroy more countries for “reasons.” And while my statements are not quite the bright flowers of this photo, I do feel very serious about this. If you disagree, I honestly don’t care. Fuck war. Fuck American imperialism.

Like nearly all my other wall hanging patterns, the No War Wall Hanging is worked from the bottom up in rows of single crochet stitches. Using Stitch Fiddle I designed this pattern as a tapestry/ intarsia project for people to customize as you’d like with colors in your stash. While I worked mine, I used a combination of techniques – I used separate skeins of color for the individual sections of color on the bottom (picking them up and dropping them down the WS when not in use) and then crocheted over some spots (like the letters) where the space was small enough. If you decide use bobbins for color work like this, be sure to work back and forth and not in a circle to try to keep the yarn from getting too tangled – here’s a video on Instagram showing what I mean.

Below the graph is available to view, that way if you’d like to make this as sc or hdc or dc you can do it… but you can also make it in C2C if you want to work the graph on a bias. And if you’d prefer you can knit, Tunisian crochet , and even cross stitch this design using the graph as well. It’s entirely up to you 😀 Just remember as you change your pick of stitch, it will kinda distort the image a bit.

And in keeping with industry standards, if you’d like written instructions to this pattern you can pick those up in my Ravelry shop (it’s written in back and forth rows so it won’t help you with C2C). I separate patterns like this because I don’t make a ton off of patterns listed for free on my blog – I do have ads but with adblock type extensions, it’s not sustainable to make patterns with just ad revenue.

I deliberately used flowers to evoke the anti-war sentiments of the 60’s because now, just like then, this war is not necessary or just. TBH, no war is. We could live in a world where we can sit and make art all day but we can’t because rich men want to hide their crimes and get richer by waging war and I for one am sick of it.
