Free Lucy Basket Crochet Pattern – Fun Texture For Your Home

Learn to make the fun, textured, and bulky weight basket, the Lucky Basket from a free crochet pattern by Divine Debris.

Happy February… or, to be honest, welcoming to whatever February you’re currently experiencing. I know that I’ve been having a really exhausting couple of months (years?) and I needed something that would work up easily and provide some good satisfaction, so I designed the new Lucy Basket crochet pattern.

Now if you’re an eagle eye, you might notice that this basket is kind of a sister design to the Lucinda Basket from 2023. When I was designing the Lucinda Basket I wanted to make something with lots of squishy and fun texture and I came up with this 2 hdc/ slip st combo. Don’t you just love it? And a couple months ago I was thinking “how to I improve on that texture?” and realized, it was obvious – camel stitch (back third loop hdc like I feature in the Diana Line).

Now this is a really easy, almost beginner pattern, that just about anyone can make. Just make sure to join with a slip st at the end of each round and turn. You wouldn’t believe how many questions on baskets I get that boil down to that, because someone is more used to working in continuous rounds and they didn’t realize this wasn’t continuous. I get the appeal but I’ve never been a fan of continuous rounds, I prefer to have the seam there because it adds structure but also an opportunity to make some really exciting texture.

As for this basket itself, it’s really fun and simple. The Base is just rounds of single crochet and the Sides is where the magic happens with the texture. Be sure to not the difference between back third loop only (BTLO) and back loop only (BLO) in the instructions because both are used but will change the look of your design if you use them incorrectly. And finally, the Handles are the last portion of this pattern you will make and they’re just sc. Super simple!

I love using bulky yarns for baskets and for this one I used one of my favorite bulky yarns, Hue + Me by Lion Brand Yarn. It’s holds up well and makes a really great basket. If you want to adjust your yarn, feel free. Just make sure you use the smallest hooks you’re comfortable with, it keeps the sides tighter. I used H/ 5.00 mm and hook for this because of the texture and stitch requirements but the yarn label itself says to use a larger hook – but the smaller hook is how to keep the sides sturdy. That’s honestly the only trick I have to keeping the basket standing, tight stitches.

I know that we’re all doing our best right now. I hope you can find something joyful in this design and look out for your neighbors. We’re all living on this planet, we need to be unified by our similarities rather than separated by our differences.

Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by Lion Brand Yarn for the purposes of designing a kit and used it for the Lucy Basket crochet pattern, with compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but I love using Hue + Me for baskets, it works up so well and it’s super sturdy and the colors are fantastic! And I was commissioned to make this pattern and you can buy a kit for this pattern on Lion Brand’s website. This post contains affiliate links. • 13 sc x 15 rows = 4″

Terms/ Stitches used

  • St: Stitch
  • Ch: Chain

  • Sc: Single crochet
  • BLO: Back loop only
  • Hdc: Half double crochet

Special Stitches

  • Back third loop only (BTLO): When looking at the front of the st you will have the 2 loops on top of the hdc (the V on top), lean the st towards you and will see the third loop that runs along the back of the st. This is the loop you will work into. This st is also known as the Camel Stitch. Please note on the rnds where you work this st you will be looking at the back of the previous row’s hdc, so the third loop will be facing you.

Notes

  • The pdf for this pattern is available on Ravelry.
  • The gauge is not super critical for this pattern, but to keep your sides standing use a hook that will get you the closest to the gauge as possible.
  • This pattern is worked from the bottom up in rounds in 3 sections: the Base, the Sides, and the Handles, with a “ch 1, turn,” at the beginning of each row. All sections are worked in the round with a slip st into the first st to join.
  • Don’t make your slip sts (not the join, the ones within the rnds) too tight or it may make it difficult to work back into.
  • The ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • The sample for this pattern uses Hue + Me from Lion Brand Yarn: in the color Spicy. Check out the kit from Lion Brand Yarn here.
