Free Riot Wall Hanging crochet pattern – Enjoy Pride Month

Hi again! I didn’t intend to make another pattern this month but creativity sometimes comes at ya when you don’t mean it to and you’d just got to make something. You know? And this month it means another Pride month design – the Riot Wall Hanging crochet pattern.

Recently I was thinking about, ya know, everything. I was thinking about my own work with Pride patterns and my own contributions to causes. As I said on my Be Brave Poster post, this year marks 10 years of marriage equality in the US, as it is the anniversary of Obergefell v Hodges and that’s wild to think about. Weirder still? The Riot! album by Paramore is 18. Yep… just think on that.

And while I was thinking on these things, I realize I had one more Pride month design in me this year – the Riot Wall Hanging. This is simple and direct – Riot, riot, riot. We celebrate Pride month because our elders fought, literally, for our ability to do so. The first Pride (and beginning of a new era of gay rights) was a riot – against police brutality and raids. If you don’t now the history of the Stonewall Riots, I urge you to read up on them. Know your history before you’re not able to.

For making this pattern, I used mostly tapestry and that means I crocheted over the inactive yarn as I worked across the rows. If you’d like a bit more insight on how I did that, I’ve got some notes on the Cat and Bag Halloween Squares post that might be helpful (about halfway down the page). Oh! And block the finished design. I swear blocking is one of the best things you can do for color work, it helps to even out all those annoying parts that might not be “perfect.”

Below the graph is available to view, that way if you’d like to make this as sc or hdc or dc you can do it… but you can also make it in C2C if you want to work the graph on a bias. And if you’d prefer you can knit, Tunisian crochet , and even cross stitch this design using the graph as well. It’s entirely up to you 😀 I used rainbow colors (in both the graph and the border) but you can customize as you’d like for your own flag colors or whatever you have in your stash (use that stash friends!). And in keeping with industry standards, if you’d like written instructions to this pattern you can pick those up in my Ravelry shop (it’s written in back and forth rows so it won’t help you with C2C). I know talking about money makes people uncomfortable but I split up these patterns this way so that people do have an incentive to pick up the pdf, it helps me to keep making patterns here on my blog. I hope you understand.

Don’t forget! I use the proceeds from the purchases of the pdfs and ad revenue to donate to The Trevor Project and Trans Lifeline. I also think that we should, when possible, move away from corporate Pride merch and instead make our own, keeping that in the community that supports us instead of the pockets of companies who turn their backs when the politics are no longer “popular.” Again, this year marks 10 years of marriage equality in the US, as it is the anniversary of Obergefell v Hodges, and just Roe v Wade this isn’t a law set in stone and we need to be aware that we will always, sadly and probably, need to keep fighting. Take care of yourselves, my friends, and others around you. As always – trans rights are human rights.

Please note: I was provided the yarn for this pattern by Lion Brand Yarn for other personal projects, just to make something fun and without compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but I’ve used Basic Stitch yarn many times over the years and it’s fantastic. A great worsted weight yarn, I’ll probably keep using it for years to come. This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase yarn through any of the links in this post, I may be compensated. Do not make videos from my pattern, you don’t have permission even if this pattern is free.

Terms/ Stitches used

  • St: Stitch
  • Ch: Chain
  • RS: Right side
  • Sc: Single crochet

Notes

  • As is industry standard, this pattern is just a free graph and not written instructions but you can purchase the pattern for a fee in my Ravelry shop.
  • Begin with a ch 45 in color A, turn, and start in the 2nd ch from the hook. Each row begins with a “ch 1, turn” and all st counts are 44 sc for the graphed portion.
  • This pattern is worked from the bottom up, row by row with a turn at the beginning of the rows. A border is then added and worked in the round around the graphed portion.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the rows does not count as a stitch.
  • This pattern doesn’t require you to carry more than 2 colors at a time (unless you’d like to do something else). I used color A and whatever the other color in use (B – G) back and forth through the rows both were needed, crocheting over the inactive yarn as I went. I didn’t carry the 2nd color all the way to the edges.
  • Blocking is suggested for this pattern.
  • In the photos: Color A is tan, color B is purple, color C is blue, color D is green, color E is yellow, color F is orange, and color G is red. Basic Stitch was used for all colors.
