  • 4 or 5 colors of worsted weight yarn
    • 1 – 2 oz. each
  • US G (4.25 mm) hook
  • Stuffing
  • Large-eye blunt tapestry needle
  • Buttons (optional)

Terms/stitches used:

  • ch: chain
  • slip st: slip stitch
  • st: stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • spike sc: spike single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • sc2tog: single crochet 2 together
  • picot: picot
  • dc: double crochet

Notes:

  • This pattern is worked from the bottom up and the eyes, wings and beak are all worked separately and then added to the main body later.
  • Rotate on rows 5 – 7 means rotate the whole piece 90°.

Finished dimensions:

  • Height: (top of ears) 7.5” – 8”, main body: 7” – 7.5”
  • Width: (diameter) 8” (at widest), 6” (at narrowest)

Pattern instructions:

-Body-

Row 1: Ch 17, sc in second ch from hook and all the way across – 16 scs
Rows 2 – 4: Turn, ch 1, sc across – 16 scs
Row 5: Rotate, sc twice into next st, sc into next st, sc twice into next st, – 5 scs
Row 6: Rotate, sc across – 16 scs
Row 7: Rotate, sc twice into next st, sc into next st, sc twice into next st, slip st into first sc, slip st into the first sc of row 5 to secure –  5 scs
Row 8: Ch 1, * sc into next st, sc twice into next st *  repeat from * to * all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure – 63 scs
Rows 9 – 11: Ch 1, sc all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure – 63 scs
Row 12: Ch 1,* sc into the next 8 sts, skip next st,* repeat from * to * the rest of the way around (note: this means you will be skipping the last st of the row and slip stitching to the first sc), slip st into the first sc to secure – 56 scs
Rows 13 – 15: Ch 1, sc all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure – 56 scs
Row 16: Change colors: ch 1, * sc into next st, spike sc into next st * repeat from * to * all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure – 56 scs
Row 17: Ch 1, *spike sc into next st, sc into next st * repeat from * to * all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure –  56 scs
Rows 18 – 19: Change colors: repeat rows 16 – 17
Row 20: Change colors: repeat row 16
Row 21: Change colors: repeat row 17
Rows 22 – 23: Change colors: repeat rows 16 – 17
Row 24: Ch 1, sc all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure – 56 scs
Row 25: Ch 1, *sc into next 6 sts, skip next st, * repeat from * to * the rest of the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure- 48 scs
Rows 26 – 28: Ch 1, sc all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure – 48 scs
Row 29: Change colors: ch 1, * sc into next st, spike sc into next st * repeat from * to * all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure – 48 scs
Row 30: Ch 1, *spike sc into next st, sc into next st * repeat from * to * all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure- 48 scs
Rows  31 – 32: Change colors: repeat rows 29 – 30
Row 33: Change colors: repeat row 29
Row 34: Change colors: repeat row 30
Rows 35 – 36: Change colors: repeat rows 29 – 30
Row 37: Ch 1, sc all the way around – 48 scs
Row 38: Ch 1, sc into the next 5 sts, ch 14, skip the next 14 sts, sc into the next 10 sts, ch 14, skip the next 14 sts, sc into the next 5 sts, slip st into the first sc to secure – 20 scs, 28 chs
Rows 39 – 41: Ch 1, sc into the next 5 sts, ch 14, skip the ch-14 space, sc into the next 10 sts, ch 14, skip the ch-14 space, sc into the next 5 sts, slip st into the first sc to secure – 20 scs, 28 chs
Row 42: Ch 1, sc into the next 5 sts, sc around the chs from the last 4 rows and into the 14 skipped sts on row 38, sc into the next 10 sts, sc around the chs from the last 4 rows and into the 14 skipped sts on row 38, sc into the next 5 sts, slip st into the first sc to secure – 48 sts

To secure: fold piece in half, all stitches will be performed into front and back sts at the same time: sc 5 times with the front and back scs lined up, slip st both sets of the 14 larger scs together, sc the last 5 sc sets together. Fasten off.

-Eyes-

Notes: Make two.

Row 1: Magic circle, sc 8 times into it – 8 scs
Row 2: Ch 1, sc into same st as join, sc twice into next st, *sc into the next st, sc twice into the next st,* repeat from * to * twice more, slip st into the first sc to secure- 12 scs
Row 3: Ch 1, sc into the same st as join, sc once into the next st, sc twice into the next st, *sc once into the next 2 sts, sc twice into the next st,* repeat from * to * twice more, slip st into the first sc to secure – 16 scs
Row 4: Ch 1, sc into the same st as join, sc once into the next 2 sts, sc twice into the next st, *sc once into the next 3 sts, sc twice into the next st,* repeat from * to * twice more, slip st into the first sc to secure – 20 scs
Row 5: Ch 1, sc twice into the same st as join, sc once into the next 4 sts, *sc twice into the next st, sc once into the next 4 sts,* repeat from * to * twice more, slip st into the first sc to secure – 24 scs
Row 6: With contrasting color: pull up a loop at join, ch 2, spike sc into next st, sc into the next st, ch 1, *spike sc into the next st, sc into the next st, ch 1,*  repeat from * to * 5 more times, slip st into the first sc to secure – 12 scs, 12 spike scs

Fasten off.

-Wings

Notes: Make two.

Row 1: Ch 7, sc into second stitch from the hook – 6 scs
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc into next 6 sts, rotate, 3 sc into the end, rotate, sc down the back of the, rotate, 3 sc into the next end, slip st into  the first sc to secure- 18 scs
Row 3: Ch 1, sc into the same st as join, sc twice into the next st, *sc into the next st, sc twice into the next st,* repeat from * to *  7 more times, slip st into the first sc to secure- 36 scs
Row 4: Switch colors: ch 1, sc into the same st as join and into each st around, slip st into the first sc to secure -36 scs
Row 5: Change colors: ch 1, sc into the first st, spike sc into the next st, *sc into the next st, spike sc into the next st,* repeat from * to * 7 more times, slip st into the first st to secure – 36 scs
Row 6: Change colors: Ch 1, sc into the same st as join, sc into the next st, sc twice into the next st, *sc once into the next 2 sts, sc twice into the next st,* repeat from * to * 10 more times, slip st into the first sc to secure – – 45 scs
Row 7: Change colors: skip 6 sts from join, slip st, sc into the next 3 sts, hdc into the next 4 sts, dc into next 3 sts, htr into next st, picot, htr into next st, dc into next 3 sts, hdc into next 4 sts, sc into next 3 sts, slip st into next st – 24 sts.

Fasten off.

-Beak-

Row 1: Ch 7, sc into second ch from hook and into next 2 chs, sc2tog next two chs – 4 scs
Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc into first two sts, sc2tog last two scs – 3 scs
Row 3: Turn, ch 1, sc into first st, sc2tog last two scs – 2 scs
Row 4: Turn, ch 1, sc2tog – 1 sc
Row 5: Turn, ch 1, sc- 1 sc

Fasten off.

Finishing: Secure the buttons to the eyes, you could also use puffy paint or yarn instead of the buttons. Sew the eyes to the top, near the spike sc rows. Sew the wings to the sides with the tips angled inward.
