Coffee Tapestry Square Afghan Project – Square 2

Oh, wow, it’s time for another afghan square! I’m nervous… this project is a bit harder than last year’s, for me at least. I don’t know if I feel more creative because I gave myself more strict conditions for this CAL (as compared to last year) or I feel worried that I’m going to run out of ideas. I really, really don’t want to make a year of cups but, also that could be kind of fun. I don’t know. My mind is still racing with ideas for this CAL and I’m still excited (I even have next month’s already designed) but I’m also so nervous.

Honestly, I’m always nervous. Week after week I worry about releasing patterns. I think “is anyone looking at these” or “does anyone even want to make what I’m making?” and if a designer creates patterns but no one is interested, is it even worth the effort? Am I even a designer at that point? I know I have talked about that balancing act, of making designs that I like but also ones people might like. I feel so conflicted, all the time about it all. I guess I’ll still keep making designs and I hope people show up for them, huh?

Anyway… one of the reasons I’m nervous about this week’s pattern is that it’s a little unusual. In my mind, this makes sense, the steam creates a heart (because Valentine’s Day) but when I designed it I was worried it wouldn’t look right to other people. You should have seen how many times I held it up to my spouse and asked him if it looked right; if it looked like the steam was making a heart above the cup. He said yes and so I was slightly more confident in posting this. It’s sort of a goofy, asymmetrical heart (which is totally my style). I really hope you like it!

    Ravelry link

Terms/stitches used

  • RS: right side
  • Ch: chain
  • St: stitch
  • Slip st: slip stitch
  • Sc: single crochet

Notes

  • This pattern is worked flat back and forth in rows, with a turn at the beginning/end of the row, from the bottom up.
  • This square measures about 7.5″ unblocked and will come out with 8″ with a sc border (explained below). The photos do not feature a border.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.
  • Every stitch in this pattern is a single crochet. The directions will only tell you what color (ie: Color A, Color B, etc…) and the number in the parentheses tells you how many scs to make.
  • Your square may need some light blocking.
  • You will need to know how to create a slipknot on your hook for this pattern.
  • In the example, the inactive yarn is carried behind the active. If this is confusing, you might want to check out the helpful Moogly video on tapestry.
  • Color A is off-white (Caron One Pound in Off-White), color B is red (Caron One Pound in Scarlet), color C is dark brown (Caron One Pound in Espresso), and color D is light brown (misc stash color).
