So, it’s definitely winter here! It’s gotten cold and now I’m crocheting under blankets and never too far from my hand is cup of warm coffee.
I’m still very much enjoying playing with thicker yarns and because it got cold around here I decided to make another ear warmer because sometimes it’s not fun to hide your head under all that yarn in a hat. I dyed my hair slightly pinker so I’m not in the mood to hide my hair. 😀 And I like that second of connection with people when they look at my hair and smile and tell me they like the color. It’s silly, sure, but it’s a moment when someone looks you in the eyes and says something nice that they get nothing from. Dunno, guess I’m feelin’ all warm and tingly, could be that my hubs is home this year and I’m in a positively great mood.

Anyway… wow, that wasn’t about crochet at all, right? So, this is the Katie Headband. It’s really simple and the notes section has some info on how you can make it larger or smaller. The instructions are just in “adult” size but it’s nothin’ to make it child sized.

Materials:

US K (6.50 mm) Crochet Hook
Size #5/ Bulky Yarn
- 2.1 oz/ 65 yards
- I used Loops and Threads Charisma in Holiday and Off White
Needle to sew ends

Gauge:

12 dcs x 6 rows = 4.25″ x 4.25″

Terms/ stitches used:

RS: Right Side
St: Stitch
Ch: Chain
Slip st: Slip Stitch
Sc: Single Crochet
Hdc: Half Double Crochet
Tr: Treble Crochet

Notes:

The right side is the side that the back of the hdc/ slip st row and tr front are facing out (this is the right side).
You can make the rows as long as you want, just make sure it’s an even amount. Just chain an odd amount + 4 for your first row.
This headband is worked flat until you reach your desired size and then row 1 is secured to the last row.
This headband is worked in two parts – main body (which is worked flat) and then the sc details around the both edges (which is worked in the round).
The ch 1 on some rows does not count as a stitch.
Color A is the variegated yarn and color B is the off white ( in the photos).

Finished measurements:
Height: 4″
Diameter: 10.5″

Katie Ear Warmer Pattern Instructions

Color A: Row 1: Ch 13, tr into the 5th ch (skipped chs count as a tr) from the hook and across – 10 trs
Color B: Row 2: Ch 1, turn, slip st into the first st, hdc into the next st, *slip st into the next st, hdc into the next st,* repeat from * to * 3 more times – 5 hdcs
Color A: Row 3: Ch 4, turn, tr into the next 9 sts – 10 trs
Rows 4 – 29: repeat rows 2 – 3, including color changes
Color B: Row 30: Ch 1, turn, slip st into the first st, hdc into the next st, *slip st into the next st, hdc into the next st,* repeat from * to * 3 more times – 5 hdcs

Leave a nice long tail and then fasten off ( at least 2″ longer than 1 row).
Secure row 30 on top of row 1 with your preferred method of joining.

Finishing: Make a slip knot on your hook and begin where your seam is from securing row 1 to row 30, sc around the entire edge by placing 4 scs into each tr space (you do not sc into the hdc/ch 1 rows), slip st into the first st to secure –
Repeat this on the other edge.
