Free Kelsey Cocoon Shrug Crochet Pattern – Are You Ready for the Coziness

Did anyone else’s November make a woooshing sound as it flew by? Because mine definitely didn’t but it’s still be a quick month. I feel like I’ve accomplished like half of what I meant to and still have so much to do before it’s “officially” holiday season (I put it in ” because as crafters we have to be starting holiday season in July to keep up, ya know). But one thing I did finish was this week’s new design that is so very squishy and perfect if you’re settling into big makes for December – say hello to the Kelsey Cocoon Shrug crochet pattern.

This design is a new addition to my ever-growing Kelsey line, which I love because it’s such fun and easy texture. And would you believe this is my first cocoon shrug since my Erin Cocoon Shrug from last year? I had such a fun time with that pattern (and also it was hit, people loved it) that I am shocked I haven’t made one since. Well, at least I have… and perfect for the chilly season.

Like I was saying before, this pattern is from the Kelsey line but that’s not where this design started. I wanted to make a fun plaid kind of look, but not quite, that I wasn’t going to use tapestry crochet for. I wanted big blogs with lots of pop, so I settled on a stripe/solid repeat but I wasn’t gonna leave it there, I used the Griddle St to add a little big more flavor to the pattern. I think the elements combined really gives the whole pattern a real fun vibe, don’t you think?

Now if you don’t want yours so big, feel free to add or subtract squares as you’d like. O make it a nice stash buster and just seam together some fun striped/solid squares. How you modify this is your business. You could add longer sleeves or a wider lapel, for instances for more snuggly warmth. It’s super customizable and easy to adapt if you want.

• US H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
• Size #4/ worsted weight yarn
  • 2 colors

Gauge

• 13 sc/dc x 12 rows = 4″ (blocked)

Terms/ Stitches used

• RS/WS: Right side/ Wrong side
• Rnd: Round
• Join: Join with a slip st
• Ch: Chain
• St: Stitch
• Sc: Single crochet
• Dc: Double crochet

Notes

• For gauge: Chain an even amount of chs that will give you an over 4” swatch (your row st count needs to be odd), sc into the 2nd ch from the hook, *dc into the next st, sc into the next st,* repeat from * to * across. Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as a dc here), turn, sc/dc across. Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc into the first st, dc/sc across. Repeat rows 2 – 3 as many times as you need to get more than 4” swatch then measure a blocked section.
• The individual squares measure 6” x 6”.
• This pattern is worked in 3 sections: the Squares/Seaming, the Lapel, and the Sleeves.
• There are 2 different square designs that you will work to create the shrug.
• The ch 1 at the beginning of some rows/rnds does not count as a st. 
• The ch 3 at the beginning of some rows does count as a st.
• Blocking is recommended for this pattern.

Square 1
Note:
– This is a solid color square.
– You will make both solid A and solid B squares in the amounts below:
– XS/SM: 9 A squares, 6 B squares
– MD/LG: 12 A squares, 9 B squares
– 1X/2X: 16 A squares, 12 B squares3X-5X: 16 A squares, 16 B squares

Instructions
(RS)Row 1: Ch 20, sc into the second ch from the hook, *dc into the next st, sc into the next st,* repeat from * to * across — 10 sc, 9 dc
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as a dc here and throughout), turn, *sc into the next st, dc into the next st,* repeat from * to * across — 10 dc, 9 sc
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc into the first st, *dc into the next st, sc into the next st,* repeat from * to * across — 10 sc, 9 dc
Rows 4 – 17: repeat rows 2 – 3.
Row 18: repeat row 2.
Fasten off, weave in your ends. Block your square so it measures 6” x 6”.

Square 2
Note:
-This is a striped square. 
-Each square starts with 2 rows of color 1 (the dominant) then 2 rows of color 2 (the secondary) and then you alternate 2 rows of each color until you reach 18 rows.
-You will make both squares that start with color A (this is your A dominant square) and squares that start with color B (this is your B dominant square) in the amounts below:
-XS/SM: 9 A dominant squares, 6 B dominant squares
-MD/LG: 9 A dominant squares, 12 B dominant squares
-1X/2X: 16 A dominant squares, 12 B dominant squares
-3X-5X: 16 A dominant squares, 16 B dominant squares

Instructions
(RS) Row 1: Color 1: Ch 20, sc into the second ch from the hook, *dc into the next st, sc into the next st,* repeat from * to * across — 10 sc, 9 dc

Drop color 1, switch to color 2.

Drop color 2, switch to color 1.
Rows 5 – 18: repeat rows 3 – 4 switching colors every 2 rows, ending on the dominant color.
Fasten off, weave in your ends. Block your square so it measures 6” x 6”.

Seaming
To create the Body seam your squares in the arrangements as shown below per your size. Color A is brown and color B is white in the graphs below.

To create the sleeves
Lay your Body piece flat so it resembles the graphs above. Fold the piece in half and seam from the open end towards the fold (you will be seaming the edges with the green squiggles as seen in the graph below) to create the arm hole. Seam both edges together, in your preferred method of seaming, until you have 44 (48, 56, 56) row ends unseamed where it’s folded. This will be your Sleeve hole. Repeat this seaming on the other side.

Sleeve
Rnd 1: A: Create a slipknot on your hook with color A (this will make your first st a standing sc) and begin in the first st to the left of the seam you made to create the Sleeve hole, sc into each st around the Sleeve hole, join — 44 (48, 56, 56) sc
Rnds 2 – 5: Ch 1, turn, sc around, join — 44 (48, 56, 56) sc
Fasten off, weave in your ends. Repeat Sleeve instructions on the other side. Block if this section is stiff.

Lapel
Rnd 1: A: Create a slipknot on your hook with color A (this will make your first st a standing sc) and start in the first st to the left of one of your seams on the Body piece edge (the open end opposite the fold) sc once into each st all the way around the open edge of the Body piece, join — 228 (266, 304, 304) sc
Rnds 2 – 5: Ch 1, turn, sc around, join — 228 (266, 304, 304) sc
Fasten off, weave in your ends. Block if this section is stiff.
