Materials:
- 1.5oz – 3oz of worsted weight yarn
- < 1 oz size 10 crochet thread
- US K (6.5 mm) crochet hook
- US I (5.5 mm) crochet hook
- US F (3.75 mm ) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
Gauge:
- K: 5.5” x 5.5” = 9 rows x 18 dcs
- I: 4” x 4” = 7 rows x 14 dc
- F: 2” x 2” = 4 rows x 12 dcs
Terms/stitches used:
- St: stitch
- Slip st: slip stitch
- Ch: chain
- Sc: single crochet
- Hdc: half double crochet
- Dc: double crochet
- Fan: [3 dcs, ch 1, 3 dcs]
Notes:
- The band is worked flat, in short rows, with the first row being secured to the last row when it’s the size you want.
- The top is worked in the round, with a slip st into the first st following the last.
- The ch 1 on some rows does not count as a stitch.
- The band is worked with the worsted weight yarn and the K (6.50 m) hook. The top has 2 parts- the worsted weight yarn, which is worked with the I hook, and the lacey part, worked with the tread and F hook.
- If you would like the band to be smaller, you can do fewer scs in row 1. Example: ch 9 and do 8 scs across.
Finished product dimensions:
- Child small: circumference: 7” – 8”, height: 4.5”
- Child large: circumference: 8” – 9”, height: 5”
- Adult extra small/ small: circumference: 12” – 13”, height: 5.5”
- Adult medium/large: circumference: 13” – 14”, height: 5.5”
Pattern Instructions:
Sizing as follows: (for the whole pattern) child small (child large, adult extra small/ small, adult medium/ large)
For the band:
With K (6.50 mm) hook and worsted weight yarn:
Row 1: Ch 7 ( 9 11, 11) sc into second ch from the hook – 6 (8, 10, 10) scs
Rows 2 – 25 (30, 45, 50): Turn, ch 1, sc across – 6 (8, 10, 10) scs
Fasten off. Secure row 1 to row 25 (30, 45, 50) with which ever seaming technique you’re comfortable with.
*Note: If you would like the band to be smaller, you can do fewer scs in row 1. Example: ch 9 and do 8 scs across.
Top:
*Note: This section is worked along the edge of the scs from the band
With I (5.50 mm) hook and worsted weight yarn:
Rows 1 – 4: Ch 1, hdc into same st as join and all the way around, slip st into first hdc to secure- 25 (30, 45, 50) hdcs
Fasten off with the yarn.
With F (3.75 mm) hook and size 10 thread:
Row 1: Pull up a loop in the last hdc worked, sc into same st, skip next st, *fan into next st, skip next st, sc into next st, ch 1, sc into next st, skip next st,* repeat from * to * 3(4, 7, 8) more times, fan into next st, skip next st, sc into last st, ch 1, slip st into first sc to secure- 10 ( 12, 18, 22) scs, 5 (6, 9, 10) fans
Row 2: Turn, slip st into the last ch 1 space from Row 1, ch 5, sc into ch 1 space of next fan, ch 3, *[hdc, ch 1, hdc] into next ch 1 space, ch 3, sc into ch 1 space of next fan, ch 3,* repeat fro * to * 8 more times, hdc into last ch 1 space from Row 1, ch 1, slip st into second ch from the bottom to secure – 5 (6, 9, 10) scs, 10 (12, 18, 22) hdcs
Row 3: Turn, slip st into last ch 1 space from Row 2, ch 3, dc twice into same ch 1 space, sc into ch 3 space, ch 1, sc into next ch 3 space, *fan into next ch 1 space (between hdcs from Row 2), sc into ch 3 space, ch 1, sc into next ch 3 space,* repeat from * to * 8 more times, dc 3 times into next ch 1 space (between next hdcs), ch 1, slip st into top of ch 3 to secure – 10 ( 12, 18, 22) scs, 5 (6, 9, 10) fans
Row 4: Turn, slip st into last ch 1 space from row 4, ch 1, sc into same space, ch 3, [hdc ch 1 hdc] into next ch 1 space (between scs), ch 3, *sc into ch 1 space of next fan, ch 3, [hdc ch 1 hdc] into next ch 1 space (between scs), ch 3,* repeat from * to * 8 more times, slip st into first sc to secure – 5 (6, 9, 10) scs, 10 (12, 18, 22) hdcs
Row 5: Turn, slip st into next ch 1 space, ch 1, sc, fan into next ch 1 space (between hdcs from row 4), sc into ch 3 space, ch 1, sc into next ch 3 space, *fan into next ch 1 space (between hdcs from row 4), sc into ch 3 space, ch 1,* repeat from * to * repeat from * to * 8 more times, slip st into first sc to secure – 10 ( 12, 18, 22) scs, 5 (6, 9, 10) fans
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
