Hi there, how are you today? I’m finishing up my vacation and heading back to my “regular” life and that’s kind of a bummer, right? I mean, I love my regular life a lot (most days) but who doesn’t want to keep those Summer vacation days going as long as you can? Well, that’s the thinking behind this week’s new design, the Watermelon Bag. Few things are more Summer than watermelon, at least it is to me. And that’s the thinking behind my free pattern this week and I really hope you like it. I also think I’ll be adjusting this pattern into a hat later, too, so if you love this bag, keep an eye out for the matching hat later in the year. And if you can get enough watermelon, check out my Wedge of Watermelon ami pattern.

Materials:

  • US G (4.00 mm) crochet hook
  • Worsted/ medium/ size #4 weight yarn
  • Yarn needle

Gauge:

  • 4″ = 16 scs x 16 rows

Terms/ stitches:

  • Magic circle
  • RS: right side (side that faces out)
  • Ch: chain
  • St: stitch
  • Slip st: slip stitch
  • Sc: single crochet

Notes:

  • This pattern is worked in the round, with a slip st into the first st from the last st.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch. The first st is always worked int the same st as join.
  • All of the stitches in this pattern are single crochets. The directions will only tell you what color (ie: Color A, Color B, etc…) and the number in the parentheses tells you how many single crochets to make.
  • The instructions that say “2x” means sc twice into the designated st and ” 2x + a number” is sc twice into the st and then on single crochet into the specified amount of sts. Ex: “2x + 3” means sc twice into the next st, sc into the next 3 sts.
  • In the example, the inactive yarn is carried behind the active. If this is confusing, you might want to check out this helpful Moogly video on tapestry
  • Color A is light green, color B is dark green, Color C is white, Color D is pink and color E is black.
  • Also check out this post about tapestry crochet from Moogly, it’s helpful.

Finished measurements:

  • Diameter: 9”
  • Height: 10″

Just wondering for the colour change, are we meant to carry A and B up the work as we go, or should we create lots of cut offs to be weaved in at the end? Sorry, I'm a beginner and have no idea how to do colour change. Thanks!

I carry the yarn throughout the bottom section. For the top section I just did small sections for the black yarn, carrying the pink. I hope that helps
